2022 Mazda 3 features detailed: New engine, grades and specification coming for Toyota Corolla, Hyundai i30 and Kia Cerato rival with update

The Evolve SP (pictured) will replace the Evolve as one of the Mazda3’s grades.

Mazda Australia has confirmed a MY22 update for the Mazda3 will arrive in the coming months, with the fourth-generation small car to get a new engine option, grades and features.

While pricing and full specification details are yet to be released, the Mazda3 hatchback and sedan’s MY22 update are now available to order and see the entry-level G20 Pure adding a leather-trimmed steering and gear selector.

The next-up G20 Evolve is now complemented by the G20e Evolve, which adds a fuel-saving 24V mild-hybrid system to the G20 variants’ 114kW/200Nm 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol four-cylinder engine.

The G20e Evolve also gains an auto-dimming driver's side mirror, keyless entry, push-button start, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, memory functionality and the Vision Technology package (driver attention warning, surround-view cameras and front parking sensors) over the G20 Evolve.

Then there’s the G25 Evolve SP, which succeeds the G25 Evolve by introducing a black grille, 18-inch alloy wheels and side-mirror caps as well as black cloth upholstery with red accents. It’s motivated by a 138kW/250Nm 2.5-litre engine.

Finally, the X20 Astina flagship can no longer be had with a six-speed manual like the rest of the range (G20e Evolve excluded), with a six-speed torque-converter automatic now fitted as standard.

Yet-to-be-detailed improvements have also been made to the X20 Astina ride comfort and engine sound, with its 132kW/224Nm 2.0-litre unit with spark-controlled compression ignition and a 24V mild-hybrid system now denoted by a rear ‘e-SkyActivX’ badge as well as ‘Sky-X’ badging on the front fenders.

Also of note, the aforementioned Vision Technology package is now an automatic-only affair, while Platinum Quartz Metallic has replaced Titanium Flash as a paintwork option, and Pure White leather upholstery can no longer be had in the X20 Astina sedan.

As reported, the MY21 version of the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai i30 and Kia Cerato rival recently had its pricing increased by $200 to $400, with the model currently kicking off from $25,990 plus on-road costs for the manual G20 Pure and reaching $42,090 for the automatic X20 Astina.
