2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid confirmed: Kia Sorento PHEV and Toyota Kluger hybrid rival officially locked in for Australian launch next year

Jeep is expected to offer the 4xe in five-seat Grand Cherokee guise in Australia.

Jeep has officially confirmed that it will offer the plug-in hybrid 4xe version of its Grand Cherokee large SUV in Australia next year.

The confirmation came as part of a release announcing the demise of the Chrysler brand in Australia, but also confirming that the electrified Grand Cherokee as part of Jeep’s 2022 line-up.

Judging by the release, it looks like the 4xe will only be offered in five-seat Grand Cherokee guise, rather than in the seven-seat Grand Cherokee L.

As reported by CarsGuide in September, the five-seat Grand Cherokee in PHEV and petrol guise will arrive in the second half of 2022, following the launch of the Grand Cherokee L in the first half of next year.

The 4xe offers 40 kilometres of all-electric driving range before the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine takes over, thanks to a 17kWh battery.

Jeep offers the Compass small SUV and rugged Wrangler in 4xe PHEV guise in other markets, but the Wrangler is unlikely for Australia given it’s built in left-hand drive only.

Jeep will no longer offer a diesel engine in the range, instead opting for the carryover 218kW/353Nm 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 as well as the PHEV.

The new-gen Grand Cherokee has undergone extensive ride, handling and towing testing in Australia ahead of its launch.

Key rivals in the large SUV segment will be the Kia Sorento PHEV and the Toyota Kluger series hybrid.
