2022 GWM Ute price and features: Great Wall Cannon moves closer to Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton and Mazda BT-50 rivals

While there are no changes in specification, the MY22 version of the popular GWM Ute Cannon is now $500 more expensive.

Great Wall Motors (GWM) has slugged another $500 on top of the Ute Cannon range in Australia.

Effective October 1, it is the second time in as many months that the strong-selling Chinese-built pick-up has seen a northward shift in prices, after it copped a $1000 jump in August.

This time, the change is only to the tune of $500 on every grade, including the recently released base Cannon 4x2 rear-wheel-drive variant.

That now kicks off from $33,990 driveaway, while the Cannon-X flagship 4x4 four-wheel-drive flagship is now from $42,490 driveaway.

Back in May, the then-entry level Cannon 4x4 also saw a $500 price hike, due to the addition of the spray-on tub liner protector standard in the higher grades, bringing the total number of rises since the series launched at the beginning of this year to three.

GWM Australia head of marketing and communications Steve Maciver points the finger to the rising cost of manufacturing, brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic, as well as the impact of the subsequent microchip shortages that have also led to widespread delays around the world.

“The price rises were inevitable due to pricing pressures along the supply lines,” he told CarsGuide this week.

“But I believe we still offer a very strong competitive proposition and will continue to do so for a very long time.”

The MY22 Ute Cannon range otherwise continues unchanged in styling and specification, meaning the base 4x2 still sets the standard in the sub-$40K one-tonne pick-up segment with autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic LED headlights and a reversing camera.

These come on top of keyless entry/start, synthetic leather seating upholstery, a 9.0-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, basic air-conditioning and 18-inch alloy wheels. Nothing else comes close for the money.

Next up is the Cannon 4x4 from $35,990 driveaway, and then a stretch to the Cannon-L 4x4 at $39,490 driveaway. The ‘L’ signifies luxury, like a sports bar, a handy cargo ladder,  a leather steering wheel, a 360-degree parking camera, heated front seats with power adjustment on the driver’s side, single-zone climate control and privacy glass. You can spot the L from its shiny chrome-plated grille and differently styled 18-inch alloys.

Finally, moving up to the aforementioned MY22 Cannon-X 4x4 at $42,490 driveaway, you’ll find a black-themed cabin with three steering modes (Comfort, Normal and Sport), a door-open warning, improved interior trim, two so-called ‘Smart Keys’, a 7.0-inch digital instrumentation cluster, a wireless phone charger, power adjustment for both front seats this time, 60/40 split rear seats with armrest instead of a single bench and a tilt/slide steering column – a worthwhile stretch that, ironically, saves some drivers from doing so.

As with all GWM Australia’s Haval brand’s Jolion and H6, the Ute Cannon is subject to a customer-feedback-driven continuous improvement program that has already seen a transmission recalibration this year.

Other changes and alterations are expected to follow soon, along with additional grades and, we understand, extended body style choices such as a single-cab and cab-chassis versions in the not-too-distant future.

Stay tuned for news on all these and more.
