2021 MG ZS EV almost sold out in Australia! Kia Niro, Hyundai Kona Electric SUV rival down to last few examples ahead of 2022 facelift launch

A small number of outgoing MG ZS EVs are available in dealerships, but they won’t last long.

If you are after an MG ZS EV, but prefer the original design to the upcoming facelift, then you’d better get in quick.

MG has confirmed that it has all but sold out of the 2021 ZS EV, months ahead of the launch of the mid-life update for the all-electric SUV.

An MG Motor Australia spokesperson told CarsGuide that there are a handful of examples of the pre-facelift ZS EV still left in dealerships around the country, but they are likely to be snapped up quickly.

The outgoing ZS EV is no longer visible on the MG consumer website as the brand does not want to promote models that are not available.

The ZS EV is currently offered in one model grade, the Essence, and is priced at $44,990 drive-away. It was the cheapest non-commercial EV available in Australia until BYD launched the e6 small wagon from $39,999 before on-road costs.

Although, once you add in on-roads, that price would be very close to the MG. Also, just 15 examples of the BYD were made available in Australia, while there were no limitations on MG’s supply.

In the likely event that the 2021 ZS EV will completely sell out in a matter of weeks, keen buyers could face a wait for the updated version.

The expected timing of the refreshed electric SUV is before the end of the first half of the year, several months after the end of supply for the outgoing car.

The mid-life update for the MG ZS is expected to arrive around mid-year.

MG is yet to reveal pricing for the updated model, and the MG spokesperson would not say whether the new version would go up in price.

However, they did say that MG has had a lot of success bringing in an affordable EV to the Australian market and that they hoped that would continue.

The ZS EV landed in showrooms in late 2020 and has been a sales success for the Chinese brand in Australia.

Last year, the ZS EV was the second best-selling EV in Australia with 1388 sales for the year. It was beaten by the dominant Tesla Model 3 on more than 12,000 sales.

The facelifted version, revealed in October last year, follows the design of the ZST, although like many EVs it has a closed-off grille with dimples.

It will be offered with two new battery options, including a 50.3kWh Standard Range version with 320km of WLTP-certified range, and a 70kWh Long Range that drives for 440km before needing a charge. The outgoing version has a 44.5kWh battery and 263km of range.

Inside it gets a tech upgrade with a new 10.1-inch touchscreen powered by MG’s new iSmart multimedia system.
