2021 MG HS PHEV confirmed! Move over Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, there is a new electrified mid-size SUV in town

The MG HS PHEV will compete against the likes of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in the mid-size SUV segment.

MG Motor has confirmed its HS plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) will land in Australian showrooms next month to take on the likes of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and incoming Ford Escape PHEV, as well as the hot-selling Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

Underpinning the HS PHEV is a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine and 90kW electric motor combo, which sends drive to the front wheels.

A 16.6kWh battery is also fitted, which should allow for a circa-50km all-electric driving range before needing a recharge.

The powertrain will also be good for a zero-to-100km/h acceleration run in just 6.9 seconds, while the HS PHEV will also return a claimed fuel economy figure of 1.7 litre per 100km, and emit 39 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

Specifications are yet to be finalised, but according to the MG Australia website, the electrified HS will sport a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, panoramic glass roof, leather-accented seats and a surround-view monitor, as well as the brand’s ‘Pilot’ advanced driver safety technology that includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.

Pricing is also yet to be released, but expect it to sit north of the standard HS range that starts at $30,990 drive-away for the Vibe grade and tops out at $40,680 for the Anfield variant.

Like the ZS EV that is Australia’s cheapest all-electric model at $43,990, MG will likely undercut competitors in same segment.

MG Motor Australia and New Zealand boss Peter Ciao said: “Launching our first plug-in hybrid will be a pivotal moment for MG, as we move towards our goal of providing our customers with greater choice, particularly in the new energy arena.

“As a global leader in electrification, we’re excited at the prospect of bringing this new hybrid model to the market to become a major part of the consideration set in new energy adoption,” he said.

“The MG HS plug-in hybrid offers the best of both worlds, combining low emissions with practicality and performance, while also remaining premium, stylish and safe. We look forward to the arrival of this innovative new model later this quarter.”
