Mercedes-Benz Australia will double the size of the new-generation G-Class off-roader range in July, with the base G400d set to join the flagship AMG G63.
Priced from $233,900 plus on-road costs, the G400d lowers the G-Class’ entry point from the AMG G63’s $289,900, which is $30,665 dearer for 2021.
The G400d is powered by a 243kW/700Nm single-turbo diesel inline six-cylinder engine, while the AMG G63 steps up with a 430kW/850Nm 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8.
Both Land Rover Defender rivals are mated to a nine-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and Mercedes’ four-wheel-drive system with low-range and three differential locks.
Standard equipment in the G400d includes adaptive suspension, metallic paintwork, Multibeam LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, side steps, rear privacy glass, a spare-wheel cover and chrome exterior trim.
Inside, a sunroof, a 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia system, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, digital radio, a 15-speaker Burmester surround-sound system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a Nappa leather-trimmed steering wheel, power-adjustable front seats with heating, and three-zone climate control feature.
Advanced driver-assist systems extend to autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep and steering assist, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, park assist, surround-view cameras and tyre pressure monitoring.
The AMG G63 adds adaptive sports suspension, a sports body kit, 21-inch alloy wheels, red brake callipers, a bi-modal exhaust system, a digital TV tuner, a Nappa leather-trimmed sports steering wheel, heated outboard rear seats, extended Nappa leather upholstery and a Dinamica microfibre headliner.
