2021 Genesis GV70 detailed: New Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3 and Audi Q5 rival gets big power and plenty of safety

The mid-size GV70 (pictured) is Genesis’ second SUV, positioned below the large GV80.

Genesis has confirmed the global engine line-up and active safety suite for its second SUV, the mid-size GV70, ahead of its Australian arrival in the first half of next year.

The GV70 has three engine options, two of which it takes from its big brother, the GV80 large SUV. These include the 224kW/422Nm 2.5-litre single-turbo four-cylinder and 280kW/530Nm 3.5-litre twin-turbo V8 petrols.

The other engine is a 155kW/441Nm single-turbo four-cylinder diesel, which is available with rear- or all-wheel drive alongside the 2.5-litre petrol, whose 3.5-litre sibling is only offered with the grippiest drivetrain.

All three engines can be had with an electronic limited-slip differential, with the 3.5-litre petrol claimed to sprint from a standstill to 100km/h in just 5.1 seconds with launch control engaged.

That said, it’s worth noting the GV70’s Australian specification details are yet to be confirmed by Genesis (and won’t be until closer to its launch), so it remains to be seen which engine options will be available locally.

Advanced driver-assist systems on offer globally include autonomous emergency braking with intersection assist.

Either way, advanced driver-assist systems on offer globally include autonomous emergency braking with intersection assist, lane-keep and steering assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, active blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention warning and rear occupant alert.

Eight airbags are on hand, including a centre item between the driver and front passenger, which is intended to head clashes during side impacts.

Genesis has also confirmed the GV70’s dimensions, with it measuring 4715mm long (with a 2875mm wheelbase), 1910mm wide and 1630mm tall, putting it in the same vicinity as the rivalling Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

The GV70’s exterior and interior were revealed in October, so if you’re interested, you can read about them in the link above. Of note, Genesis has now confirmed a fingerprint reader is fitted, with it able to facilitate individual driver profiles more easily and support valets.
