2019 McLaren BP23 sketches reveal F1 spiritual successor

McLaren has dubbed its three-seat, F1-succeeding hypercar the BP23 for now.

McLaren has given fans a first look at its latest Ultimate Series hypercar, the three-seater codenamed BP23, by dropping an early design sketch image revealing sleek lines and swoopy styling.

Dubbed BP23 as McLaren Special Operations (MSO) second bespoke project, and having three seats, the British supercar-maker is promising a hybrid powertrain to propel "the most powerful and most aerodynamic road-going McLaren ever."

The current king of the road-going McLaren range is the discontinued P1 hybrid hypercar, which managed to produce 673kW/900Nm from a 3.8-litre turbocharged V8 paired with an electric powertrain, and featured a 351km/h top speed.

However, rumours suggest McLaren will leverage its brand new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 – that debuted during the Geneva motor show in the Super Series level 530kW/770Nm 720S – paired with an electric motor to motivate the F1's spiritual successor.

Therefore, performance is expected to eclipse the 720S' zero to 100km/h time of 2.9 seconds, and could possibly beat the P1's 2.8s time to triple digits.

McLaren will limit production to only 106 examples, matching the number of iconic F1s produced from 1992 to 1998, but cashed-up McLaren fans only hearing the news now have already missed out as the entire production run has been pre-sold.

Aside from an expected 2019 release, no other new information is revealed by the Woking-based supercar-builder but if the sketch image is anything to go by, the production version will feature a prominent rear diffuser, pumped up wheel arches, a heavily sloped rear roofline and thin, futuristic tail-lights.
