Why the dislike of CVTs?

On reading many of your new-car reviews, I notice that often when stating the vehicle in question is equipped with a constantly variable automatic transmission you remark that CVT is not a CarsGuide favourite. Could you elaborate on the negative aspects of CVT please.

Japanese brands have moved to CVTs for fuel economy but the result is generally lacklustre response, excessive noise that sounds like old-fashioned manual 'clutch slip" and - in some cases - a car that wants to roll backwards on a hill. I could go on but there's not enough space.
