Hyundai Santa Fe 2009: What's it worth?

After eight months trying to work out what was causing our 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe to lose all acceleration, the Hyundai mechanic has finally determined that the computer has completely died, and that it would cost $6000 for a new one. He also told us that we shouldn't use secondhand/off-market ones. So our car is now not able to start and worth absolutely nothing. What is your view about using a secondhand computer, and are you able to give me an estimate of the car's value. It's a diesel and otherwise in reasonable condition.

It’s always a risk to use a secondhand part, because you have no guarantee of its condition, but if you don’t want to spend the full amount for a genuine factory part then the risk might be worth it. If sold privately it would be worth $9000-$12,000.
