What's a good 4WD for $20,000?

Asked by Katrina

I am looking at a 2014 Subaru Forester or a Toyota RAV4 for my 18-year-old P-plater son, but I can’t decide which I should go for. My son is going to work in northern country NSW for two years as a jackaroo so wants a 4WD.

He really wants a ute, but my budget won’t allow that, and I would prefer something safer. My budget is $20-$25,000 and I would prefer nothing over 80,000 km. What would be the best choice?

Either one would do the job, but I would choose the Forester over the RAV4, it’s a better all round all-wheel drive that should serve your son well.
