VE Berlina V6 high fuel consumption

The best fuel consumption I can achieve from my 2006 VE Berlina V6 auto 8.9 L/100 km when sitting on the highway at 100 km/h. Around town it jumps to nearly 20-22 L/100 km. It's done 72,000 km, is in very good condition, has new tyres at the correct pressure. Your expert insight would be appreciated?

It's odd that there's such a disparity between steady-state highway driving and round town use. If the performance has dropped off I would be checking things like the exhaust backpressure, which might show up a blocked or partially blocked catalytic converter; if the performance hasn't altered look at the oxygen sensors.
