Sensitive transmission in Holden Cruze

I have a 2014 Holden Cruze Z 1.8-litre, 6-speed auto.
When driving on the freeway in auto with cruise on, going uphill it kicks
down to fifth, which is OK, but when you continue up it drops down to fourth and revs to
 about 5500 rpm.
Still going up the hill in auto with cruise on, you move the gear lever into manual
and change up to fifth gear the car still keeps the same speed.
Holden said this is normal. Is it?

I assume it depends on the gradient involved and it doesn’t happen on every hill, just the steeper ones. It seems that’s the way it is calibrated to work.
