New lifestyle car with roof racks

We have a Volvo V70 and are looking for another "lifestyle" car with roof racks for road and mountain bikes and kayaks, and one that can go soft off-roading for access to rivers. It will mainly be used around the city, but we do some highway runs. We've looked at the Subaru Forester, VW Tiguan and Touareg and Golf Wagon, Audi Q5, Volvo V60, XC60 and 90 and now are confused. We're not fussed if it is diesel or petrol but it must have good economy and be cheap to run.
