Knocking Falcon similar to Holden

After reading about Laurie Bright's issue with an engine knock in his 2008 Holden I thought I'd tell you about my 2003 Falcon, which had a similar problem at 96,000 km. It happened two days after being serviced and having heard the same noise in two other AU Falcons I thought it was just another Ford thing! A different mechanic performed the next service and he used a different grade of oil after I told him about the noise. Also, the noise only ever happened on a cold morning. The car now has over 128,000 km and I can't remember the last time I heard the knock. I realise the Laurie's Holden was nearly new when the knock started but it could still be worth using a heavier oil.

Your car has probably got worn lifters and the heavier oil helped shut them up, but being new Laurie's problem is likely to be something else, like piston slap.
