The 2010 Holden Cruze I bought used nine months ago have broken down. The gearbox has failed and needs to be replaced. A mechanic has quoted $4400 to replace it with a secondhand gearbox. My warranty covers me for $3000 of the quoted price, which leaves me $1400 out of pocket. I think that's ridiculous, especially as I've only had the car for a short time. Is that a rip off for a job like that? Or is that a typical price for a replacement and labor? Is there any other way where I don't have to fork out money from my pocket? My warranty company only works with their nominated mechanical services, but will negotiate with me to find a cheaper gearbox. How much are gearboxes? Can I make a complaint?
Had you done your homework you would have found that the gearbox in that model Cruze is a lemon. The price you have been quoted to replace the gearbox seems reasonable. You could try negotiating with the company that issued the warranty, but I doubt you have a realistic chance of getting any help.
