    Brake wear in a 2013 Honda Civic

    My 2013 Honda Civic VTi-S Hatch wore out its rear disc pads at 32,000 km. The wear indicators didn't work, and the pads scored the disks/rotors. Apart from being scored, I was informed that they the rotors were almost worn out. The front pads are still less than half worn! I understand that this is common, but Honda has compensated owners both here and in the US (Class action). Honda states: "The braking system fitted to your particular model uses the benefit of softer materials designed to achieve more efficient braking in the wet & cold conditions and in emergency braking situations as they require less heat generation before becoming effective. The Civic Hatch has an improved rear brake application to decrease weight distributions to the front of the vehicle under braking, which improves the vehicle stability and as such improves safety levels. Ultimately, the increased rear brake application will result in increased rear brake wear." If this is their design intention, i.e. get the rear brakes to do all the work, then perhaps they should upgrade the rear disks and pads accordingly.

    To wear out at such low kilometres suggests that Honda has got its brake balance very wrong, and the rear brakes are not capable of what they are being asked to do. I agree, they should upgrade the brakes, both front and rear. If you want to get better life out of the pads and rotors you could consider using aftermarket parts.
