I am in the market for a new car near year's end to replace my Holden Cruze SRI 1.6 turbo hatch. I am considering a medium hatchback or perhaps a sedan or medium SUV, and I have about $40,000 to spend before my trade-in. Several vehicles I am attracted to have constantly variable transmissions — which I dislike, having driven a number as hire cars. Others have dual-clutch autos and there are numerous examples of models that have well-documented problems so I would prefer not to go there. I am reduced to vehicles with conventional autos and manuals but the latter options are fading fast. The second problem is that I like cars with a bit of grunt but so many now have engines that are just OK for trickling around the suburbs but are underpowered when one hits a highway. Can you suggest a medium-size car with an engine that has a bit of grunt that is fun to drive?
Two choices that get The Tick from me are the Toyota Camry sedan, which can be quite punchy with the 2.5-litre petrol engine and is great value, and the Kia Sportage SUV with turbo diesel.
