Ask Smithy Xtra Shoddy paint job on Mitsubishi Triton

Q: The paint on my 2001 Mitsubishi Triton GLX the starting fading and crazing very badly on the roof and bonnet when it was about four or five years old. As I had paid for paint protection when I bought the vehicle new I took it back to the Mitsubishi dealer as well as another one closer to me. The first dealer admitted he saw a lot of "darker coloured Tritons in for servicing with the same problem". I have also noticed that at least 90 per cent of vehicles with the similarly badly faded paint are Mitsubishi?s. Both dealers basically said it was my problem and nothing to do with Mitsubishi, but I was wondering if you know anything about this being a common problem with Mitsubishi paint jobs, and if there is anything they will do about it?

Faded paint is not restricted to Mitsubishi’s; you see cars of all makes and models with paint fading. Unfortunately the quality of painting on cars today isn’t very good. They look shiny when they’re new, but they soon start to lose the look. You could try cutting a small area to see how it comes up, then leave it for a month to see if it fades again. If it doesn’t fade you could then go ahead and cut the rest of the body, if it does fade your only option really is to repaint it.
