Nissan Dualis 2011: Bubbles on tyres

Asked by Emahen, Dandenong, Vic.

Recently I noticed small golf ball-sized bubbles in the sidewall on one of the tyres on my 2011 Nissan Dualis+2 AWD TI. The car has only done 6,800 km, mostly on sealed roads and never off road. After inspecting the tyre my dealer told me he could not do anything and asked me to take it to a Continental tyre agent. I did but the agent wanted to charge me $400 to replace it, and believing the tyre to be faulty I refused. I also contacted Nissan customer service and they were not very helpful either. I then sought a second opinion, which was that the tyre was faulty. What other options do I have?

Unfortunately, the most likely thing that has happened is that the tyre sidewall has been fractured through hitting a kerb and it’s the rubber outer casing that is bubbling. It’s a relatively common failure. The best thing to do is to strip the tyre from the rim and have a tyre expert inspect it. Once you do that I would expect to see the fracture on the inner sidewall.
