Asked by Surush
In the last few months there is a very irritating squeaky noise coming from the fan belt of my 2004 Hyundai Accent. My mechanic says there seems to be no problem at all; he douses the belt with silicon spray and the sound goes away only to be back again the next day. He advised me to buy Silicon spray and use it when there is too much noise. What can I do?

15 Jul 2010Using the silicon spray would reduce the noise for a short time, but the effect would soon wear off as you have experienced and the noise return. Try scuffing the surface of the pulleys with a fine grit wet-and-dry paper and then fitting a new belt. If that fails to quell the noise, fit a new alternator pulley. Also make sure the belt is tensioned correctly.
