Ford Falcon 2011: Turbo rattle

At 106,776km I took my 2011 FG Falcon XR6 Turbo to the dealer to check and report on a rattle coming from the side or rear of the engine. The rattle was evident at start up, idle and deceleration, but quiet the rest of the time. The dealer called me to say the noise was coming from inside the bell housing asking for permission to remove the auto trans for inspection, as there would be a cost. Permission was given and on inspection they found the centre of the flexplate cracked right around the boltholes. The car was out of warranty, and I was asked to pay $792, but I was of the opinion that this sort of failure should not happen and that Ford should cover the cost of repairs. I was told to contact Ford Customer Care myself and put the case forward, which I did. They said that as the part had failed out of warranty it is not a component failure, and they were sorry for my inconvenience. As the car has always be serviced by a Ford Dealer and was only 6000km over the warranty period it is a bit rough in my view. I wasn't expecting Ford Australia to cover the complete cost, but half would have been acceptable. Am I being unreasonable about this?

No, I think you have a good case, particularly as you are not asking for the whole cost to be covered. Flexplates do crack, more on performance cars because of the extra loads they have to endure, but if it does crack it's a poor design in the first place.
