Jamie Whincup is the most successful touring car driver in Australian motor racing history - and he might be the least well-known.
He has avoided controversy throughout his illustrious career and is notoriously private away from the track.
So, while he’s amassed more championships, race wins and pole positions than more well-known drivers including Peter Brock, Dick Johnson and Craig Lowndes, he’s not achieved their household name status.
He announced his retirement from full-time driving in 2021 but will remain a key part of the sport for the foreseeable future because he’s taking on the role of Team Principal with Triple Eight Race Engineering.
Whincup achieved all of his major successes with the Triple Eight team, which hired him in 2006 as the ‘apprentice’ to star driver Lowndes. But it didn’t take long for Whincup’s talent to shine through and he emerged as the driver to beat in V8 Supercards from 2008 onwards.
While Whincup prefers to focus on his racing and keep his private life private, there are still plenty of burning questions you want answers to.
He was born in Melbourne February 6, 1983. That makes him 38 at the time of publication.
He’s 182cm tall.
Whincup has a house on the Gold Coast to be close to his Brisbane-based race team.
Working out Whincup’s net worth is particularly challenging because he has remained with the same team for the majority of his career, so details of his salary have been withheld.
He’s also active in business, running a part of car wash cafes in Queensland as well as taking an ownership stake in Triple Eight.
His parents are David and Sandra Whincup. David passed away in 2012 after a short battle with cancer.
Jamie paid tribute to his father at the time, calling him his “best mate” and an inspiration.
Yes, he has one sister.
Whincup guards his privacy so much that it’s unclear if he has a wife or not. However, he did reveal in October 2021 that he has a partner and they are expecting their first child in February 2022. There have been rumours that he did get married, but nothing has been publicly confirmed by Whincup.
He did have a fiance, personal trainer Courtney Nicholson, and was set to get married in 2016 but cancelled the wedding.
Yes, he recently released his autobiography Jamie Whincup, Drive of a Lifetime, which was co-authored by Scott Gullan.
Yes, he’s on all three major platforms - Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. He’s easy to find, too, with his handle simply being @jamiewhincup on all three.
He has a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 thanks to General Motors’ sponsorship of his Triple Eight Race Engineering team.
A lot. As the most successful touring car driver in Australian history he has won 124 races and recorded 92 pole positions.
Whincup has driven for Triple Eight Race Engineering since 2006.
He has won the Bathurst 1000 four times - 2006, ‘07, ‘08 and ‘12. The first three wins he shared a Ford Falcon with Craig Lowndes. His fourth win was shared with Paul Dumbrell in a Holden Commodore.
He also has one Bathurst 12-hour win to his credit. He shared a Ferrari 488 GT3 with Lowndes and Toni Vilander in 2017.
Yes, Whincup and Dumbrell crossed the line first in the 2016 Bathurst 1000 but were penalised for a controversial clash with rivals Scott McLaughlin and Garth Tander.
Whincup was blamed for causing the crash and penalised 15 seconds, which dropped him and Dumbrell to 11th place in the final order. However, Triple Eight appealed the decision but failed to have the penalty rescinded.
He won a record seven driver’s titles during his V8 Supercar career. He won the championship in 2008, ‘09, ‘11, ‘12, ‘13, ‘14 and ‘17. He dominated the sport between 2007 and 2017, only finishing outside the top two positions once in that 11 year stretch (fifth in 2015).
