Q

While my 2006 Toyota RAV4 was in for service last week I asked the dealer to check for a leak that was obviously coming from the cooling system due to the color of the coolant. It was found to be the water pump. My car has only done 20,000 km and I was told this should not happen at such a low mileage. Do you think I have reason to take this matter further with Toyota?

If it was under warranty it would most certainly be covered, but I assume your warranty has run out. Even so there is no good reason for the water pump to need replacing after 20,000 km, except for a faulty part, so I would suggest you take it up with Toyota. At the very least they should pay for the replacement part.

  • John you can try and deal with Toyota but they are definitely ostriches with their heads buried in the sand when it comes to addressing problems in their vehicles. It makes me laugh when they say that problems in the Rav 4 are only with Japanese Vehicles not Australian cars ...What Rot! My wife purchased a 2004 Rav 4 Cruiser in Feb of that year andright from the start it had a sticky accelerator…it surged on start up and when it warmed up would constantly stall..but look out if you stopped and restarted again within half an hour while the motor was warm it will push on with no need to use the accelerator…and when you use it the accelerator sticks until all of a sudden it throws you back in the seat…..After many trips to the dealer I was told by Toyota that Rural Toyota Dealers don’t have the up to date computerised rectifications required to fix my wifes car..So of fto Canberra for a Fix…But No luck they couldn’t fix and after some amount of pressure from us they contacted Toyota..The Official line on the problem with the Rav 4 is:  Toyota subcontract the Fuel Injection System on Rav 4 to Yamaha and because Yamaha are a Japanese company that conforms to the Kyoto Protocol.
