Prado belches white smoke

Q

My 2007 Turbo Diesel Prado randomly belches copious amounts of white smoke on ignition. This has been diagnosed as failing fuel injectors. Armed with this information I went to my Toyota dealer who tested it and came to the same conclusion. Both recommend injectors. So, on my behalf the dealer made a claim to fix or compensate me for the repairs, which would cost $4000. Toyota advises they will pay half the cost of the injectors, which still leaves me out of pocket $2200. Considering the vehicle has only done 100,000 km, I feel this is very poor form from Toyota. They are supposed to be very reliable vehicles, as I have found in the past. I am very frustrated and disappointed, what should I do, should I take the offer or push for full compensation?

A

Take the offer. Like all components fuel-injectors wear out over time and then need replacing. By offering you part payment for repairs Toyota has in effect acknowledged the issue and are offering to compensate you for it. Remember you've had 100,000 km out of the first set.

  • I own 04 Prado, it developed 60 cm crack on passager side above glovebox. Took it to toyota dealer that services it even though I brought it second hand from different toyota dealer. They put in claim with toyota and they kicked in $650 towards getting it fixed. I paid $790. I was over the moon all things considered.this took place two weeks before Christmas. I was told that always being serviced by Toyota made all the difference.

  • Toyota fitted dud injectors to early D4D diesels. This was rectified in an update in 2008. Injectors should be good for at least 200000km. Toyota should be replacing them free of charge. The injectors on my 2007 Hilux needed replacing after 40000 km. Toyota replaced them under warranty. The downside was fuel consumption went up by 3L/100KM.
