Nissan rated the X-Trail to tow 2000 kg with trailer brakes, so you should be able to safely tow up to that weight. Remember, that's the total weight, including whatever gear you carry in the trailer. X- Trail owners swear by Hayman-Reece load leveling bars.

Every thing will be fine untill your caravan gets the death sways. bottom line, dont tow more than the car weighs.
GEOFF THOMAS Posted on 15 February 2012 7:03pmThere are two main aspects of towing to consider, the loaded weight of the towed vehicle and the down force on the tow ball or coupling. While the X-trail rates towing weight at 2000kg, tow ball loading is 150kg. At the general rule of thumb that tow ball loading should be about 10% 0f towed vehicle mass, this would put the weight of the van at 1500kg loaded. Another consideration is that the towed vehicle should be about the weight of the towing vehicle, again about 1500 to 1600kg. Every other light utility vehicle in this category with a 2.4 to 2.5 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine is also rated at 1500 to 1600 kg. The later diesel with the Continuously variable transmission is only rated at 1300kg. As the question relates to safety in towing, you would be better to aim at about 1500kg rather than 2000kg. Look on the internet for the x-trail and caravan forums for other peoples experience.
