Q

We are planning to do an extended trip around Australia in our 2002 Nissan Patrol 4.2-litre turbo-diesel towing a 1600 kg off-road camper-trailer. I'm thinking of fitting it with an LPG system, but I've heard differing opinions on doing it. Some say LPG can be harmful to the engine, others say it isn't. What do you say?

A

YOU NEED to be very careful when having your diesel converted to dual-fuel, converting diesels is quite a new science compared to the conversion of petrol engines and there isn't the same level of experience there to call on. It does work, and can cut fuel consumption, but It's also quite easy to increase the engine's power to the point where the engine can be damaged. Speak to the converters involved and ask them if you can talk to other owners who have made the conversion so you can get their opinion.

  • I have the LPG with the 4.2 diesel, and although the economy is not much greater, the performance is very good. It has increased the torque so gear changing is reduced. On the highway, cruising is a lot easier. At the same time as having the LPG fitted, it was recommended that the exhaust should also be considered. A full 3 inch exhaust from the turbo outlet has made good improvements. The system I used was the D Gas which is computer controlled and uses sensors., not the Venturi adjustable one. I feel confident that the mixture is more controlled with a computer rather than the manual adjustments on a Venturi. The motor runs smoothly and rarely do I see any smoke from exhaust. This motor has done just under 120 000 ks.
