No it's not normal for a modern diesel to blow a lot of smoke. It sounds like it's too rich, check the fuel pump.

Steve we had a ‘05 VW Transporter which blew a intercooler pipe and blew massive amounts of smoke. Seriously, they could use it in the war to lay a smoke screen. When we got it fixed, it kept overboosting real jerky and was still blowing smoke, although not as bad. Started overheating. They replaced the waste-gate. Still didn’t quite fix it. All it was - a faulty clamp on the turbo outlet and the intercooler out let. It was leaking air, making it blow smoke etc. So I’d recommend checking all the hoses and the wastegate, just in case it’s not boosting enough. Cheerio
