A

Magna belts are generally pretty durable, but the recommended change time is 100,000 km.

  • Agree deejay51 AND temperature as heat affects the service life of timing belts. GMH found that they had to reduce the 80,000km recommendation to 60,000km for the Euro built Astra as they were having too many belts fail before reaching the 80,000km. Hotter ambient temperatures here. Holden Astra gets very hot under the bonnet and it is not cheap to replace the belt.

  • Belts are also at the mercy of AGE deterioration, being a 2003 I presume the odometer is passed the 100,000km mark? If not then the criteria ia AGE and most Car Manufacturers (cars fitted with fibre timing belts) recommend 100,000km OR five (5) years changeout whichever comes sooner.
