Mazda MPV spluttering problem

Q

Our 2004 Mazda MPV has an intermitting spluttering problem, and our Mazda dealer has not got a clue why or what is happening. We have had the PCV checked, the coils tested, the transmission serviced, all the spark plugs replaced, and an auto electrician has checked every lead. From the time you start the motor it will be missing like an irregular heartbeat and when you drive it, it takes a few seconds for the power to kick in, but then it won't do it again for a few weeks. Can you help?

A

Intermittent problems can be hard to diagnose, they never seem to happen when the mechanic is present to observe it. But when yours is misbehaving it continues to misbehave for some period of time. Next time take it straight to a mechanic and have them run their diagnostic equipment over it. It would be worth having the injectors cleaned, if they're partly blocked the engine can splutter and misfire, and have all of the engine sensors checked.

  • I have a 2004 Mazda MPV with what appears to be the same problem. Mazda were COMPLETELY USELESS and apart from costing me a small fortune have been unable to provide any answers. The fault generally occurs after a heavy down pour and clears up either after 60kms of driving or after the car has dried out. The spark plugs, coils, etc have been replaced and nothing has made a difference. The problem settles if you are travelling at 90km/h or above, but comes back and is certainly more apparent at lower speeds.

  • It’ll be your coil packs and they’re expensive to replace.

  • I bought a 2004 MPV 3 weeks ago. I am having the same problem. I took it back to the dealer. They then sent it to Mazda who did the diagnotic test. They could not find the problem, but thought it may be the air filter?sensor? so they replaced it. I then got my car back but the problem has not resolved. Any suggestions as I am planning to go back to the dealer on Monday, They might appreciate any help.
