Q

I owned a BA Falcon, which I used as a taxi for four years. I found the cure for a noisy diff was to change the oil and add Penrite Diff Additive. There was never a murmur after that.

A

I can recall when driving XR8 utes around the Winton race track a few years ago that it only took a couple of laps of hard driving for the diff to start whining. The answer than was to change the oil. It's a good tip for anyone whose car has a noisy diff.

  • The problem with ute diffs is the oil level is too low for constant angry cornering like at Winton - they need to be overfull as all the oil goes up the tube and isn’t where it should be
Also Ford specify an additive for their diff oil in the workshop manual

  • Graham are you saying that Ford changed my BA XR8 diff 3 times + could not get rid of the whine with any diff as they were all duds and all they had to do was put Penrite Diff Additive?
