Q

How often should I run my dual-fuel 2001 AU Falcon, on petrol? I currently run three tanks of LPG to one tank of petrol.

A

It is good practice to run approximately 20 litres of petrol per month to keep the petrol volatile. The reason it's recommended you maintain a quarter of a tank of petrol is to protect the fuel system components such as the petrol pump, which may remain active during operation on LPG.

  • There are a few issues here, in a dual fuel (Petrol/LPG) car it is certainly advisable to regularly, certainly monthly, run the car on Petrol to stop the liquid fuel (pump, lines, seals, whatever) from drying out. There is an equally critical issue and that is the state of the Petrol sitting (unused) in the Fuel Tank, Unleaded Fuel is a DISASTER with regard to storage, it cannot be stored for any length of time, it does not contain lead (doh) hence the lubricating function is gone and IF you intend to keep the fuel for over a month just sitting there then I would strongly recommend an additive such as STABIL be added in a concentration as recommended by the Manufacturer. The days of storing fuel in containers for a considerable length of time and the old adage of keeping the contrainer filled to the brim to prevent condensation are LONG GONE. Unleaded fuels are not suitable for long term storage, they break down into an awful gunk, I’ve been there!
