How much for stamp duty on your car?

Stamp duty is based on which state you live in.

New South Wales

For passenger vehicles, stamp duty is charged at the rates below, including on the GST component.

Car Values        Stamp Duty
$44,999 or less        3% (eg, $3 for every $100 or part thereof)
$45,000 or more        $1,350 (3% up to $45,000)

           PLUS 5% for the amount over $45,000 (eg, $5 for every $100 or part thereof)

Queensland

Duty charged on vehicle registration transfers (other than special vehicles) is:

Car Type        Stamp Duty
Hybrid or electric    2% (eg, $2 for every $100 or part thereof)
vehicle 1-4 cylinders    3% (eg, $3 for every $100 or part thereof)
Vehicle 5-6 cylinders    3.5% (eg, $3.50 for every $100 or part thereof)
Vehicle 7+ cylinders    4% (eg, $4 for every $100 or part thereof)

For used cars, the duty is charged on the greater of the market value or the amount paid for it.

South Australia

For private vehicles in South Australia, stamp duty is tiered at the rates below.

Car Values        Stamp Duty
$1,000 or less        1% (eg, $1 for every $100 or part thereof), with a minimum of $5
$1,001 to $2,000    $10 + 2% on the amount over $1,000
$2,001 to $3,000    $30 + 3% on the amount over $2,000
$3,001 or more        $60 + 4% on the amount over $3,000

Tasmania


Car Values        Stamp Duty
$600 or less        $20
$600 to $35,000        3% (eg, $3 for every $100 or part thereof)
$35,000 to $40,000    $1,050 + 11% for the proportion over $35,000
$40,001 or over        4% (eg, $4 for every $100 or part thereof)

Victoria

For new passenger vehicles, stamp duty is charged at the rates below.

Car Values        Stamp Duty
$59,113 or less        3% (eg, $6 for every $200 or part thereof)
Over $59,113        5% (eg, $10 for every $200 or part thereof)

For used passenger vehicles, stamp duty is charged at 4% (eg. $8 for every $200 or part thereof)

Stamp duty is paid to the dealer if you are buying from one, or to VicRoads for private sales.

Western Australia

For new & used light vehicles, stamp duty is calculated as per the rates below.

Car Values        Stamp Duty
$25,000 or less        2.75%
$25,001 to $50,000    2.75%
            PLUS an additional percentage based on a sliding scale for each particular purchase price.    For example, $30,000 car (2.75% + 0.75%)
$50,001 or more        6.5%
