Holden Calais SIDI wagon: review

The Holden Calais SIDI wagon is a good looking, purpose-built wagon with a roomy, comfortable cabin and a five-star crash safety rating.

Neil McDonald road tests and reviews the Holden Calais SIDI wagon.

In the rush to high-riding soft-roaders, many families have largely ignored a more practical route - wagons.  Heavy off-roaders have taken over the roll as the family bus but in reality a conventional sedan-based wagon will fulfil most duties, unless you absolutely need a seven-seater.

For many, a car like the five-seater Holden Commodore Sportwagon will fulfil most duties.  It's a good looking, purpose-built wagon with a roomy, comfortable cabin and a five-star crash safety rating.

The Calais V Sportwagon adds a little more bling but serves a similar purpose. The integrated DVD system in the roof is a bonus for keeping the kids quiet and the rear-view camera is a welcome addition to the parking sensors.

Engine

Under the bonnet the biggest new arrival with the latest Commodores is SIDI - or Spark Ignition Direct Injection - which improves fuel economy and the overall smoothness of the V6.

Unlike the previous raucous six, the SIDI engine also sounds quieter. The refined engine is now at a point of its development that it has become a world-class unit.  The economy from the big locally built six is also impressive. We managed in 12s around town with the promise of better highway economy.

Interior

The changes from the six-speed auto also feel smoother than we remember.  The only mark against the Commodore is the cabin. It has been around since 2006 and is due for a freshen this year.

We're use to the thick A-pillars and the guillotine handbrake action but the Calais interior and dashboard is looking tired, particularly when you line it up against Ford's effort with the Falcon G6E.  The wagon's swoopy rear also eats into luggage space but there is no denying it is a handsome vehicle, particularly the Calais V version with its stylish 18-inch alloys.

  • SIDI = Spark Ignition Direct Injection. So it has spark plugs? I think they were invented 150 years ago. Direct Injection I believe was first marketed by Mercedes Benz in 1953. It’s just another Holden marketing trick. Here’s an idea, put ICE badges on them, for “Internal Combustion Engine”.

  • More evidence of Australians’ obsession with style over function.

  • Gordon of Adelaide, I would like to see your Camry pull 1.5t of lambs to market on gravel road. What would the Merc look like after hitting a roo? And good luck getting a Honda serviced in the country. People don’t just buy a car based on fuel economy. Idiot!

  • Hey Mick, they did test Falcon and Commodore at Bathurst for 1000kms. Falcon won the test hands down. The Falcon is 10% better with its fuel economy than the Commy. SIDI Technology HA!!!

  • Gordon of Adelaide, The commodore runs a petrol engine not a diesel.pretty good effort if u don’t even know what a car runs on. On the other hand I will purchase a holden once they sot a diesel under the bonnet then it will be the perfect car for Australia’s vast distance.

  • Wake up Gordon. You can’t compare the fuel economy with a Toyota Camry for the simple reason that one is a large car and the other medium at best, in other words totally different classes. Try comparing apples with apples, or in the case of a Camry Lemon vs Lemon (only good for fleet sales and the elderly). A true comparison would be Commodore against Falcon which is the direct market competitor. And forget about those hybrids, we are talking family cars here, not skateboards!

  • Wow! a whole 12 l/100 k. Isn’t it time Holden caught up with the real world? I get better economy out of my petrol Camry (10 l/100k) around town. My previous small Toyota gave me just over 7 around town. Mercedes have a diesel engine that give 5.7, Toyota, Honda and Ford are right into hybrid cars, and poor Holden are still trying to develop a half reasonable diesel. Still, lots of Australians buy their inefficient cars. Who’s sillier - Holden or the car buyer?

  • Good looking & the economy sounds good for that size vehicle around town.  My only complaint is the swoopy rear means the tailgate opening is well forward into the roofline & you can’t put a long load (Ladder, surfboard) on a roof rack because it sticks out over the front bumper line. If you put the load further back the tailgate won’t open!

  • A diesel that only gives 12 l/100k? What a joke, when most other manufactures get better than that out of petrol engines!. Mercedes get 5.7 out of their new diesel. I get 10 out of a Camry. Holden proudly announce their big leap to a very ordinary diesel while others are rolling out hybrids (Toyota, Camry, Ford’s Econet). It’s about time Holden got serious about fuel economy, and about time Australians stopped buying petrol guzzlers like this.

  • The Ford 4Ltr use’s less fuel than that. So much for Holdens SIDI Technology.

  • I manage 12 arounds town in a small car, and I’m not that heavy of a foot.

    This engine is a beauty!
