A Clubbie like no other... HSV has gone a step further with the high performance 6.2-litre engine. Photo Gallery

  • Video

  • The engine is essentially a 6.2-litre Clubsport unit with a Harrop supercharger.
  • For the mechanically attuned, it's music to your ears.
  • There is no point at which brutal acceleration isn't available.

The Walkinshaw Performance HSV Clubsport can thrash the HSV W427 ? and a lot of other rivals.

As if a Clubsport ain't enough, HSV have gone and put a blower on the 6.2-litre, high performance V8 engine.

That ups power to a withering 470kW and torque to a mountainous 770Nm.

That's 630 horsepower in the old money or right up in V8 Supercar territory.

It's part of an upgrade kit for the Clubbie R8 that takes it well beyond the W427 in performance terms. The kit is available at certain HSV dealerships.

Why would HSV do this especially after just finishing production of 200 “be all to end all” W427s?

Obviously they want a hero car on the books all the time and this one certainly fills the bill.

It is one of the quickest cars we have ever driven, eclipsing some `supercars' including highly regarded models from Lamborghini, Porsche and Maserati. German bahn-blasters like the Benz C63 AMG, Audi RS6 V10 and BMW M3 don't even rate a mention.

“Rubbish” … the nay-sayers will scoff. But rest assured, one drive will convince even the biggest sceptic. It puts away a 0-100km sprint in about 4.0 seconds but the real strength is roll-on acceleration — like no other.

The 1825kg Walkinshaw Performance Supercharged Clubbie we drove not only blows plenty “exotics” into the weeds, with all the option boxes ticked like our test car, it costs a `mere' $97,160.

The engine is essentially a 6.2-litre Clubsport unit with a Harrop supercharger mounted in the vee and a big-bore stainless steel exhaust out the back complete with a `rolling thunder' burble on the over-run.

The supercharger makes an incredible whine when you're on the gas competing with the blatting sports exhaust note for dominance.

For the mechanically attuned, it's music to your ears. Others may find it offensive but it's certainly frightening if you're not prepared.

There's so much grunt percolating out of that all-alloy, pushrod V8 that it's difficult to stop the rear wheels spinning under brute acceleration in the first three cogs and there's no need to feather the clutch to get them going.

The Poms already have a similar car called the Vauxhall VXR8 — also a Walkinshaw effort — but it only puts out 420kW/715Nm.

The red monster we had for 24 hours is a step up again.

It has special equipment to tame all that poke — adjustable coil-over suspension with 15-way damping adjustment, six-piston front brakes, four on the rear, a special clutch, oil cooler, vented bonnet and other go fast goodies.

The result is a Clubbie like no other.

There is no point at which brutal acceleration isn't available. It hits hard and fast as soon as you push the accelerator. The front of the car rises, the rear squats, its emits that blood-curdling whine and blatt, and the rear wheels scrabble for grip. After the first rocket thrust, you hit the cut out at 6600rpm, select the next cog in the close-ratio six-speed box and it starts all over again.

It's a handful on tight roads because of the instant power and torque but once you spool your driving up to the task and figure out the best technique, the WP Clubbie is devastatingly quick point to point.

The brakes cope OK and the adjustable suspension is best set up firm because it's easy to bottom out on comfort setting.

Steering? We didn't pay that much attention because you can nearly get this car around corners on the throttle.

It looks better than a Clubbie because of the 22-inch wheels and large bonnet scoop. But inside it's pure Clubbie except for the WP badging.

This is a car to be reckoned with and certainly shouldn't be driven by people with an attitude problem. It also likes a drink with the average on our mad fang hovering in the 22-litres/100km area. It's no Prius that's for sure but you've got to have some fun in your life, eh.

The WP Clubbie is for the mechanically attuned with considerable driving talent, oh, and a large wallet.

Price: $97,160

Transmission: six-speed manual

Power: 470kW

Torque: 770Nm

  • Only people who’ve owned or regularly driven a hSV will understand they aren’t just an SS with a bodykit. They truly are a pleasure to drive and now it’s bolted a hulk supercharger in the VEE not only have they satisfied power figures on paper but seat of the pants feel will put all skeptics in there place. What a car!

  • “We can be Australian with out being bogan” Your name is steveo…You?re a crack up. Funny bogans. Bring on the blower, yep old technology, whoopy-doooo, it’s making how much power from that “dinosaur” motor? I’ll take one to park next to the blown Maloo. Steveo and bogan two words that actually should only be used in the same sentence.

  • Why “dis” this Holden? Because it is vulgar and makes us all look like fools internationally. Let’s get clever people, lose the good ol’ boy American “bigger must be better” sentiment and start to grow up a little. Our national insecurity as evidenced by things like this dinosaur is a crying shame. We can be Australian without being bogan!

  • All you idiots who bag Holden V8s obviously haven’t spent much time driving them. This car is a beauty and you are un-Australian and gay if you don’t like it. Euro cars are overpriced and over rated not strong enough for hard driving on our roads unless you drive like a girl. Long live the V8s.

  • I work at a Holden dealer and I drive HSVs all the time. Don’t get me wrong, the current 325GTSs are good but this thing sounds like a whole other ball game. Definitely going to be talking to my boss about sourcing these in especially since special model GTS’s are going for around 97k.

  • wow - i just watched the video then - $97,000!!???? And you literally could drag a Gallardo or an R8 (the V10 one)....or maybe even a GT2 and an F430. You maybe like 0.2 seconds slower than the latter two from a standing start - but under 100K!!!??? that’s INSANE!!! 200K to 300K LESS than these supercars I’ve mentioned. And the amazing thing is your family or four mates can come to. I’d happily spend 100K one of these. I wouldn’t care that it wastes fuel quicker than a petrol tanker exploding - I would never have anything less than a grin from ear to ear when driving this thing. And that’s what a performance car’s supposed to do.

  • logan, of course it won’t out-do an exotic around a track - but how often do people take their car around a track - never. How often do people overtake? All the time. In the real world, it’s down straight roads where you want the advantage. And snappytom - everyone makes small fast cars - that’s boring. I’d happily buy this car and I’d have an absolute BALL driving this thing - much more fun than in a ‘small, fast car’ - happily screaming by a them as well. These cars are fantastic!

    alex Posted on 13 April 2010 10:41pm
  • Who ever wrote that car review must own a volvo . If you had any idea an can read
CAPA did an article on the same car with a ss sportswagon an G6e turbo . SS Sportswagon with a 5 Grand Supercharger can keep up with it an can run 12.8’s all day .

  • what a pile of junk, there is no way that car will out doa lambo or any other exotic on the track, its a heavy, heavy car with the aerodynamics of a brick, also i know a number of people who own the non supercahrged version, clutch and rattling engines are common,i dont see reliabilty being long term with that supercharger on there

  • 100 grand for that heap piss off! cheaper to build your self but then again i would buy bmw or merc least i will have something safe and built right.
i two years it will be worth 35 grand never hold its value nor will the bmw or merc

  • As some have commented you could use this car for shopping or taking kids to school, but who would spend $100,000 on a daily driver? An the evo and sti are slightly slower on the benchmark times but have the other features (seats, space) not to mention a better fuel economy, $20,000 cheaper and produced by more reputable car makers. The only type of person that would buy this is a holden nut (i still pref holden over ford though).

  • Your Nemesis of Fisherman’s Bend,

The commodore is a FAMILY car!
It needs to be roomy, have a big boot and tow the family caravan- as well as other things.
HSV’s are designed to still do those things but with a abit of kit for the “driver”.
Why would you look at purpose built 2 door supercars when doing the chassis?
What do you mean fix the handling? Every review I’ve ever seen of a HSV(including international) usually states that they handle well.

    Karl Posted on 03 July 2009 1:07am
  • To be honest I’d just like to drive one

I was thinking about an 06/07 M3, but with this new Walkinshaw, there might be another option.

If I can just work out who the hell sells them in WA !

  • I dinosaur thats what this car is out of date, had a drive in a new S4 Audi no comparison to a HSV stops goes looks and built better.
Good luck with the resale value anyone thinking of buying Holden

  • I would like to challenge the 0-100 in 4 seconds theory,i have a vy clubby with harrop supercharger and the same sort of power with federal semi slick tyres at low psi and are lucky to get 0-100 in 4.5 seconds.

  • Can anyone tell me how much boost the ‘Super Clubsport’ is running

    Kano Posted on 24 May 2009 1:15pm
  • To the mesmerized throngs .... still slower than a R35 Jap rice burner round the track with (120+kw) a speed limited version, what a disappointment. I’ve got the answer, lets put more power into it…..  NO guys…......, fix the handling then you can start crowing deservedly! But under the current Commodore platform this will be all but impossible. Take a look under a Porsche/Lambo/Ferrari when time permits & you’ll see why power cant fix everything.

Your Nemesis of Fisherman's Bend Posted on 19 May 2009 6:23pm
  • To everyone judging this car to Porsche/Ferrari/Lambo/R8 etc, you’re all stupid, get your facts right first!
The HSV is a 4 door, 5 seater you can drop the kiddies off at school, or get your groceries in. NOT a 2 door, mid-engined, stripped out track car, you would only ever use on the weekends. How many of you have seen a 4 door, 5 seater Gallardo lately?
Another Commodore, yes, but isn’t the FPV F6 just another Falcon?
We should be comparing the HSV to the likes of M3, M5, C63, E63, S63/5 and other 4 door saloons and not mid-engined 2 doors.
A truly incredible car made by us, Aussies. Craig W got it right.. “Some of us love the feel and sound of V8 rear wheel drive. It doesn’t have to (and I’ll add won’t ever) make sense to people who drive cars for other reasons”, such as a mode of transport from A to B, and those of you who whinge at fuel prices even though you drive like a retard, which is why your using the extra fuel in the first place!
Fuel is still cheap here in Oz, so lets make the most of it while we can. To those of you who say “why” I say to you, “why not”?

  • It’s just a very expensive commodore.  Next.

Deano of Canberra Posted on 16 May 2009 3:27am
  • The reviewer simply said that in a straight line this car can rival these euro supercars. Which is true.
How many of you idiots have ever driven a lambo/ferrari etc… Or a high powered V8 for that matter.

    Gavin Posted on 07 May 2009 2:01pm
  • Okay, it has a big engine.. no real coverage of handling… would like to see how it copes with a corner in the wet. Big V8’s are fine if that’s your thing but it doesn’t matter a damn if it can’t put the power to the ground.

I agree with most comments here, the reviewer shouldn’t compare it to the Euro cars… different beasts entirely.

    Rega Posted on 05 May 2009 10:14am
  • not just a commodore. jeremy clarkson from top gear said that FPV F6 is the best sports car under 100 000 aussie dollars. I challenge that.

me of Perth. Posted on 02 May 2009 7:26pm
  • I challenge jeremy clarksons comment that the FPV F6 is the best sports sedan under 100 000 aussie bucks. Just cause it is newer than the HSV!!! Dave F, why do you love Ford? It is not a normal commodore for crying out loud? Use the brains you have. HSV builds a car to combat every possible competitor. Just cause it is like a lambo.

HSV ROCKS!!!! I need a girlfriend as well. of Perth. Posted on 02 May 2009 7:24pm
  • As you said, Holden builds a car to combat every rival, this HSV owns. Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson named the FPV F6 the best sports sedan under 100 000 dollars. Now I challenge this statement with confidence. And Dave F, do you hate Holden? Seriously.

    I love E.P. Posted on 02 May 2009 7:20pm
  • Lionel Hurst - If that is your attitude why did you waist your time even reading/watching the video, you’re an idiot.
Dave F - I agree completely with the Lambo theory, though Audi do produce a few perfomance/family oriented cars but I do concede you get what you pay for.
Andrew J - You don’t get the monaro. It is due to simple economics mate, Holden have to effectively design a whole new car which will be too expensive for the average consumer due to performance parts & limited chasis numberrs unless of course your ideal world is to see monaro’s in all sorts of power levels for all sorts of prices for all sorts of people and unfortunately most people don’t want coupe’s which is unfortunate for you & me & Holdens conundrem with the Monaro. It is much cheaper to stick a blower on there, redo the MAP,tune it, new exhaust, strengthen the drive line & bottom end and decompress the engine for the booooost which is why you got this beauty & W427 although I really don’t think the suspension upgrade is required unless holden didn’t get it right in the Cluby (though my mates seems the bit, it’s not, like they have added any extra weight) and I don’t believe this little is worth an extra $45k
Craig - your on the money and I drive an XR6T give credit where credit is disserved. Force Fed Fun Woo Hoo
DB - As above with Dave F, how can you compare a family sedan with a purpose built mid mounted Coupe for over $250,000 AUS other than the performance which I think was his point what he should have been comparing it to was the AWD Station Wagon Audi with the 5.0 litre twin turbo but again the price tag was up there & so was the Audi’s weight. Be very intersting track times and over all finish.
Digitalags - as above with Lionel Hurst you idiot. Oh by the way don’t ever compare a starlet to a family sized car again & certailnly don’t compare a camry to either an XR6 or SV6 or above of either family. Certainly mention the TRD Aurion. Side note betcha me other car the superchaged AE92 corolla would whip your starlet in any figures you want but then again we weren’t talking about your starlet.
John Hutch - If only Ford took a leaf out of holdens books with this supercharged V8 idea. I’m sure the 5.4L would still stick it to ya but Ford Pussy around to much with thier tune. Ford have the Tech they just aren’t using it, Oh I’ve bitten. Coodohs to Holden for the for-sight. Pitty about the price tag and the engines arcahaic platform.
Charlie F - Again I don’t think the R35 GTR is comparable in price or lay out are you even able to register it in Australia last time I looked I couldn’t import it other than track use.

Adam F of Perth Posted on 17 April 2009 12:49am
  • Please don’t compare Holdens to Lambos or Mercedez, they are lightyears ahead in everyway. Still like the aussie V8 (with a yank engine), but comparing commodore to European cars is like comparing a tricycle to space shuttle. If you got balls and want a real man’s car, got buy the new R35 GTR - Long Live The Legend !!!

    Charlie F Posted on 15 April 2009 6:16pm
  • What a top car, Holden sticks it to Ford and just about every other maker - Globaly, once again. Good to see an Aussie car manufacture showing some inititive once again. Long live the Aussie car industry and the V8. And a near all comers dominator. For under 100K. Who needs those German & Italian imports.
    p.s. David F your are a SNOB.

John Hutch of Sydney Posted on 11 April 2009 4:42am
  • A great car made in a great country! There will always be a market for this type of car. Some of us love the feel and sound of V8 rear wheel drive. It doesn’t have to make sense to people who drive cars for other reasons. For me, it has to be women, in cars it has to be a V8 rear wheel drive. We all have passions, enjoy them while you can!

Craig W of Sydney Posted on 08 April 2009 9:22pm
  • Someone said it ealier - ‘tall poppy syndrome’. The VE has recieved many awards over the years. It is a credit to Holden and Australia that we build such a car at an affordable price. True it does not come from Europe, but this means that Australians can call it their ‘own’. The VE is the still despite reduced sales Australia’s no.1 seling car and this is the ultimate VE (beside the W427) version. True smaller, boring cars can get you from A - B, but why would you want that?

I think too many people have read half the story and missed the point.

This is the very latest in a long line of Aussie Muscle cars. At a fraction of the price of amything else with 470kw and 770nm in a large Aussie sedan with room for 5 and luggage, this is great vaue in anyone language.

    Dave Posted on 08 April 2009 2:19pm
  • It’s about time motoring journalsists woke up to the real world. Cars like this “win” in some ways, but fail miserably in most of the important areas. My little Toyota Starlet would have walloped this beast in terms of fuel economy, ease of navigating in the city, and it probably would have pushed it in terms of space (I am 190 cm and find Holdens cramped, but the Starlet and my current Camry roomy). Certainly the Starlet would win in terms of running costs (both Starlet and Camry cost me less than $400 insurance a year). It would also carry 5 adults at 110 kmh, which is as fast as you can legally drive! Holden and Ford wouldn’t be facing such a bleak future (and jeopardising the future of their workers) if they started to produce cars that were economical and cheap (yes I know some will split hairs and say HSV make this car, not Holden). How many hybrid, diesel or even 4 cylinder cars do they actually make here in Australia. It saddens me to see journalists get so excited about stupid cars like this one. Can’t get as much car anywhere else for less than $100,000? Try the Mercedes E series diesel, which has more class and pedigree, better quality and technology, and uses 5.7 l/100k. I know which one I would buy.

digitalags of Adelaide Posted on 08 April 2009 12:45pm
  • “Steering? We didn’t pay that much attention” - Ha, says a lot for the quality of the road test. They probably didn’t want to test out the steering because the car would throw them into the nearest tree. “blows plenty “exotics” into the weeds” pff. Barnwell must have no perception of quality if he believes this commodore is in the same league as Lambo, Porsche and Maserati. Clearly the size of the engine is his only concern, completely disregarding the engineering brilliance of the cars he compares this HSV to. I bet the only thing preventing him giving the car 10/10 in the cringe inducing video is because it isn’t a ute.

    DB Posted on 08 April 2009 8:44am
  • Before rubbishing the car, take it for a drive. If you were honest you’d probably agree that you can’t buy that much car anywhere else in the world for under A$100,000. It appears that the tall poppy syndrome for some Australians is still alive!

Craig Warden of Sydney Posted on 07 April 2009 8:11pm
  • So… GM/Holden say we can’t have a Monaro because “there isn’t enough demand” yet we get this beauty along with the W427 and such, plus the yanks get their Pontiac G8…

    Andrew J Posted on 07 April 2009 7:47pm
  • It is still just a commodore. Please don’t mention Audi, Lamborghini etc in the same article as a holden commodore.

really is there anyone silly enough to by a commodore for 100k

peter s of adelaide Posted on 01 April 2009 5:32pm
  • John - HSV only make performance cars. You should be directing your wish list to Holden, who make the grocery getter versions you desire. Personally I think it fantastic that our family sedan has so many frocks and this new offering keeps the lion firmly in charge of the performance jungle, by no small measure.
However, you are right about the horse & cart, with peak everything at our doorstep. We all know cars like this will soon be extinct, but while the oil party is still cheap enough to continue, so will cars like this, to those who can afford them. Racing carts won’t be nearly as much fun and burning hooves just won’t be the same. Until we can’t, we will.

The Muppet Queen of Dubai Posted on 31 March 2009 4:32pm
  • Well - so what?  How many variations to the basic commodore can there be rung out of the shell.  Suppose as many as possible before it is back to the horse and cart but for 99.9999% people this car is not even on their lotto wish list.  Why not just a great cracker jack diesel & 6 speed auto for the Commode so we can have some decent around the city economy (yes this where 90% of Aussies live) and then lobby like hell to get some decent diesel prices.  It has to be done sooner or later so why not now and stem the hemorrhaging Commode sales.

    John Posted on 30 March 2009 3:41pm
