Dodge Nitro goes off!

A brash-looking newcomer will soon be turning heads on Australian roads.

The Dodge Nitro might not be as imposing as the bigger SUVs or four-wheel-drives that muscle their way through traffic but it still has a presence and imposing air.

For the image-conscious it definitely qualifies as a macho machine but importantly for those looking for economy it won't be so crippling at the bowser.

Nitro designer Tim Anness said the M80 project began life in January 2001 as a drawing of a pick-up for a concept vehicle.

“We then also looked at an SUV and it was popular,” he said.

“Research came back that the front end looked too much like a Jeep with its rounded headlights, so we changed to the square ones.”

The Nitro features the iconic Dodge crosshair grille with the Dodge rams head in the centre.

The chrome grille has been stretched from corner to corner, including squared-off lights, with fat fenders extending further and a clamshell hood or bonnet on top. The effect is all macho.

Nitro is not timid with technology, either — it is very intuitive.

The Dodge Nitro is well-versed in digital entertainment and communication technologies, including MP3, CD, DVD, USB, VES (for Video Entertainment System), and a new one, MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System.

MyGIG includes a 20-gigabyte hard drive where music and photos can be stored.

Chrysler Group's Australian managing director Gerry Jenkins said: “The Dodge Nitro has a wide range of potential customers ranging from mid-sized SUV buyers through to Falcon and Commodore owners looking for something different.

“The Nitro is certainly fresh with macho good looks, it has 'get outta my way styling' and a kick-ass turbo diesel option that would be particularly attractive to buyers with a price tag that would surprise and delight.”

Among the vehicle's standard equipment are electronic stability program, electronic roll mitigation, all-speed traction control, brake assist, advanced anti-lock brakes and side-curtain airbags.

The Dodge Nitro will be available standard with a 3.7-litre V6 mated to a four-speed automatic, while the 2.8-litre common rail turbo diesel engine will come standard with a five-speed automatic.

  • I've owned my black SXT 2.8 CRD for a week now. OUTSTANDING - what a brilliant vehicle.
Stunning power and torque, with 4 cylinder fuel economy !
Everywhere I go, people stop to look at it - nothing else on the market looks as mean as the Nitro.
Comfortable seats, and a cleverly designed interior.
Would I recommend a Dodge Nitro to my friends? You bet - I love the thing!

  • Interesting to note Dodge Nitro's diesel makes more torque than the so-called mighty landcruiser diesel V8 turbo!

  • I have just placed my order for a Nitro 2.8CRD. The towing capacity is 1600KG without the Load equalising hitch, i had to check this for towing my boat. The fuel rating of 9.4lL/ 100km is good for this size deisel engine. I have not driven the diesel yet but have a deal with the dealer that i drive before i pay, he says it beats the petrol by miles. The styling is great and the electronic aids are a big plus. The Mazda CX7 is a good drive but compared to the kit in the Nitro comes now where near, the engine is peaky needing revs and a towing capacity of 1600KG is not great for that size SUV. No drink holders in the back or anything really, cheap is a word i would use and i am currently a Mazda driver. The forums from the USA show the Nitro is a great puller and that is with the 3.7L and the 4L petrol engines and with the 4x4 switchable and traction control all adds to what should be a great seller. I have been looking for ages now to find a medium SUV with a good towing capacity and all the safety gear without paying a premium and it took a US manufacturer to come up with what looks like the real deal.
Take delivery next week and cannot wait.

  • I think the dodge nitro looks great.  very different to the rest of other SUV's in its class.  May have mixed opinions on its looks as it is very American.  Also pleased to see a good powerful turbo diesel.  Would like to see the towing capacity.

  • Why is it that a load equalising hitch is neaded for towing over about 1350kg in the Nitro.  The detroit diesel develops 460nm of torque which is more that the nissen patrol, pajero, new pathfinder, and prado, only the grand cherokee with the 3lt diesel develops more torque (500nm).  How will it handle towing the european caravans ie Geist and Burstner that don't use load equalising hitch, that are now sold in Australia.  All these questions need to be clarified by dodge before I buy one for towing

  • Highly interested in this vehicle with a stunning look and appeal,Knowing towing capaities, fuel consumption and general requirements of a standard vehicle is always looked upon by any future buyer.Straight gas system for any vehicle should be a high concern considering todays fuel crisis and possible should be looked at being No1 on their list.Notification as to whom will be selling these SUV's would be an advantage so as we can inspect the vehicles personally and not via IT advertising or magazines.
Well designed medium SUV that might just sit in my drive sometime this year. Thanks

  • I'm interested. But why is it I always have to chase the specs elsewhere when it comes to towing capacities. I categorise vehicles this way. To place the Nitro as an interest to Commodore or Falcon buyers do we assume a competitive unbraked tow rating.? 2100 - 2500kg.

  • Its looks nice, what is its ancap rating and fuel usage like? Why not a 5 speed auto for the petrol version? It has less tourque and would surely benefit from more ratios. The mazda cx7 has 6 speed autos. I would also wonder about resale value.
