Volkswagen Golf. Nissan GT-R. Honda FCX Clarity. Fiat 500.

These are the best new cars in the world today, based on the results of the only global Car of the Year contest.

The latest Golf VI is the overall World Car of the Year for 2009, with the GT-R taking the Performance Car crown, the fuel-cell Honda chosen as Green Car and the Fiat as Car Design.

The awards were announced at the opening of the New York Auto Show after a three-month voting process involving 59 World Car jurors from 25 countries, including Australia.

The Golf claimed its crown after a shortlist of 51 nominations was culled to 10 semi-finalists and then three finalists, beating out the Ford Fiesta and Toyota iQ in the deciding vote compiled by the international accounting firm KPMG.

The GT-R had an easier run with a smaller field of only 23 contenders, although it still had to trump the latest Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, while the Clarity and Fiat were chosen by a smaller panel of experts appointed by the WCOTY organisers because of their expertise in the fields of technology and design.

The awards are now in their sixth year and the Golf joins a list of previous winners which began with the Audi A6 in 2005, followed by the BMW 3 Series, Lexus LS460 and Mazda2.

The Golf was a welcome winner and praised by judges for everything from its styling to engine choices.

"It also feels more expensive than other family hatches, thanks to its solid build and high-quality cabin. Sitting on an outstanding chassis, the VW is more refined than its rivals, especially when highway cruising," says the WCOTY judging panel.

The GT-R claimed its crown in a category where performance rates above everything else, although production must still top 500 cars a year.

"This is a complete effort put forth by the normally conservative Nissan and the pleasure is in doing laps of a favorite circuit and feeling the sheer capabilities of the car," says the WCOTY team.

There were 22 contenders for the World Green Car award, which was only open to vehicles actually on sale. The hybrogen-powered Honda made the final three, thanks to a lease program in the USA, in a mixed group which included the petrol-engined Toyota iQ and the Mitsubishi iMiEV electric car.

"The FCX clarity is an utterly real, hydrogen-fuelled luxury sedan that provides the amenities people expect in a premium car with 430 km range, fuel consumption of about 3.3L100 km and zero tailpipe emissions. While there is only so much the automotive industry can do when it comes to this technology - governments need to come onboard to help create a true refuelling infrastructure - Honda must be credited for taking a bold step. There's still a long way to go before fuel-cell cars will become a commercial success, but hats off to Honda for continuing to advance this expensive technology during a time when ev ery cent counts."

The three finalists for the World Car Design were the Jaguar XF, Citroen's C5 sedan and wagon, and the Fiat 500, with the Italian car getting the nod for its "cheerful and cheeky design".

"It does a brilliant job of capturing the visual appeal of the original version while meeting modern design and engineering standards."

  • @ Crow 1 - Have you driven the Mazda 3 and Golf extensively? The professional motoring writers did and decided the Golf was superior. You're obviously just defending your own decision because you feel a bit silly that the car you decided against has been judged as better than the one you bought. You love your Mazda? Great - enjoy it and its kitsch interior and awkward styling. Meanwhile, a majority of drivers and motoring professional have concurred that the VW is better overall. It was, after all, an article about WORLD Car of the Year, not Australian Small Car of the Year.

  • The Golf is too conservative. The GT-R is bulky. The Honda might as well be a concept car. The Fiat has not really caught on over here.

  • I have a Golf MKV, 2.0TDI Manual. I LOVE IT! Best car I have ever owned. My VW dealer has been exceptional and offer fleet servicing rates to ALL customers.

  • To me, the only positive comments come from: 1) VW Fans 2) the so call '...its European' mob (Yuppies) Yes, I did consider the Golf but bought a Mazda3 - does everything the Golf does but for less. And reliable!!

  • You'll never see me in a VW dealership ever again, after my wife's lemon (Mk V Golf) and the disgraceful customer service that went with it. I don't think I'm the only one - VW rank 2nd last (out of 38) in the reliability surveys (JD Powers 2008 IQS - approx. 30,000 vehicles assessed), and their unreliability is notorious throughout the industry. So much so, JD Powers are now consulting to VW to improve their quality issues. I won't get fooled again.

  • I glad the new VW Golf World car of the year. German cars are always great.

  • Why didn't the Holden Commodore win world car of the year????

  • Do any of you actually own a Golf ? I have done over 220,000 km in my MK3 trouble free. Also have any of you have driven the car. You don't have to wring it's neck to get any performance out of it. Looking forward to my new COTY 2009.

  • Great choice for car of the year - I don't and never have owned a VW, but nearly purchased one recently. The build quality is astounding, and a couple of friends with GTI models have only positive things to say about them. Actually, I agree with all the picks - except maybe the Fiat, but I can't think of anything better off the top of my head. I ended up with the Audi A3 Quattro Ambition that I personally think is a very underrated car.

  • Can't kill them with a big stick. I drive them all the time in my job and I cane the crsap out of them and they just keep on going.

  • The only people who should comment on the fact that the Golf won "unfairly" should actually drive it and preferably own it! No good saying "oh but my Bora was shocking" and even "We all have VWs" as one person wrote. This is about the VW GOLF not the entire VW range!

Chris of perth Posted on 14 April 2009 6:39pm
  • This car is garbage....I have known too many people have countless faults with these cars. All with very low k's I hear this model has only 'minor revisals' this is absolute rubbish car of the year. all its got good is a nice interior

Sarah O of Sydney Posted on 14 April 2009 3:32pm
  • well I have been a VW person my whole life and my father as well as my brother have all driven golf for as long as I can remember and they may have been boring to look but they certainly did'nt drive boring or handled that way,as far as reliabilty I have never had any issues with any of my volkswagen and never will as these cars are built to last .For a model to in competition with the like of BMW 1 series and the Mini as well as Peogeut and Alfa they stand on there own due relialibilty and built quality.

  • With just 3 and a half months of 2009 behind us how the hell can ANY car be the car of this year???Do the judges know what the rest of the year holds!?

Captain Splatt of Goolwa Posted on 14 April 2009 3:27pm
  • Right ... WCOTY for an over-priced, unreliable, boring Euro crap-box with a pathetic resale value. Just proves the irrelevance of WCOTY as a World Award. Hyundai i30 kills it in almost every criteria and will perform vastly better on Australian roads, at the gas station, and at trade-in time.

Ross Williams of Sydney Posted on 14 April 2009 2:48pm
  • My wife has a Golf 1.6; I have a Passat W8; my son a Touareg V6 and we cannot believe the negative comments about reliability. The choice of "WORLD CAR" could not have been better!

Ben of Melbourne Posted on 14 April 2009 1:56pm
  • I have already owned two VWs thanks, both purchased through peer pressure, both failed to do what they were supposed to do. One a commercial VW couldn't even climb a local hill, the other was sooooo very very slow. BTW Carsguide, as published in the Courier Mail, is just a simplistic propaganda outlet for Eurocrap NEVER see anything about other marques..

Henry Holden of Geelong Posted on 14 April 2009 1:46pm
  • The Golf may be a high scorer on the "World Car" pick of motoring journos - but their choice is based on the very narrow parameters of a drive in a new car, and their impressions. Nowhere is cost of ownership, value, reliability, service backup, or cost of parts considered. As someone who has numerous friends who own Golfs and other VW products, I would never buy one based on their experiences. Initially costly, relatively unreliable, poor quality of many important parts (plastic radiator tanks amongst others) and costly service and parts, means that the Golf is a poor choice for many people, as they end up disappointed. They are O.K. if you swap vehicles every 2 yrs, but for a long-term purchase, they are bad news.

    Ron N of Perth, W.A. Posted on 14 April 2009 1:34pm
  • While Volkswagen's vehicles may well have "solid build and high quality cabins", they also have a poor record of reliability in recent years. After my experience with a VW Bora a few years back, I will not be purchasing another VW.

Brian of Melbourne Posted on 14 April 2009 12:12am
  • What a boring choice! It's only a tad better than the MKV Golf with hardly any advancements/improvements. They might as well have chosen the MKV Golf as 2009 world car!

Darren Monk of Melbourne Posted on 12 April 2009 7:37pm
  • Can you really believe these tests. "WORLD CAR" It was revealed, on a Top Gear episode last year, that FIAT!!! scored first place! in a highly respected reliability study peformed in Europe. Can you believe that. Corolla, Mazda 3 and Hyundai i30 are better cars here in "AUSTRALIA" for the money while the Golf costs too much. Anyway this new Golf may be very good but looks very boring. Ultimately the Mazda 3 for me thanks. Hang on a minute! I read in an American auto reliability study last week that Jaguar scored first place and Volkswagen scored quite low! So! what should we believe?
