Toyota HiLux recall

    16 owners reported a fault with the HiLux in Australia involving the tailshaft support bracket.

Australia's favourite off-road workhorse, the Toyota HiLux, has been hobbled by a recall.

More than 100,000 utes are involved in the first major recall involving Toyota Australia since the world's largest carmaker was first hit by global safety and quality problems last year.

Toyota managed to dodge the accelerator dramas which led to the recall of more than eight million vehicles globally but it has been forced to a local recall after 16 owners reported a significant HiLux fault in Australia.  It involves the tailshaft support bracket in the four-wheel drive version of the HiLux, which can fail and potentially lead to the tailshaft hitting the road.

Toyota says there have been no reports of crashes.  In all, 116,000 HiLux four-wheel drives, built in Thailand from January 2005 to February 2010, are involved in the recall.

It comes as Ford Australia recalls the PJ and PJ-model Ranger to have the bonnet striker replaced and also to fix the shift cable bracket on the PJ Ranger.

Toyota's troubles in the US continued this week with a recall for the Matrix and Corolla over a computer problem which can potentially affect the engine. The cars are not sold in Australia.

Toyota Australia spokesperson Laura Hill said the effected vehicles had come from country New South Wales.  "People who frequently cross very severe road conditions, mining companies have these conditions as well, but we believe there will only be a small number of vehicles that will need the new cross member, the bulk of the vehicles recalled will be fitted with the new brackets," she said.

All vehicles will be inspected at Toyota dealerships with two courses of action.  If no damage is found the company said it will install a reinforcing brackets - a three-hour job - or if damage to the cross-member is found, the rear tray would have to be removed for a new modified cross member, which could take as long as two days.

The issue is apparently most likely to occur in rural areas if the vehicle is frequently accelerated or decelerated quickly under extreme conditions on rough roads.  The high loads that are put on the drivetrain - severely corrugated roads or cattle grids - may force the rear tailshaft centre bearing support brackets to give way.

Hilux owners yesterday said they had not yet been contacted by Toyota.  Mark Hennessey, of Hennessey Constructions in South Australia, bought a new HiLux single-cab 4WD turbodiesel, his first new vehicle in mid-2009 under the Federal Government's small business investment company vehicle allowance scheme.

"I've not been contacted by Toyota yet but I haven't had any problems with mine, it's the third one I've had and it carries a pretty big load most of the time," he said.  Mr Hennessey said Toyota normally dealt well with recalls on vehicles used for business.

"It wouldn't be a good thing to have it off the road for a couple of days, but sometimes you can get loan car from them, but maybe not with something this big," he said.  Shane Plumridge, owner of two Ultra Tune service centres in Queensland, bought a turbo-diesel 4WD HiLux last year and has not experienced any problems.

"However, we've just had a look underneath at the tailshaft centre bearing support bracket and it looks like a cheap piece of metal that has been bent into shape," he said.  "It looks like it would be strong enough for a two-wheel drive, but maybe not a four-wheel drive.

"My stores are in city areas, although we do have some rural customers, but we havent heard of any problems.  "The'yre still one of the most reliable cars on the road and one of the most popular 4WDs."  He said Toyota had not yet sent him a recall notification.

  • I am having problems with my fuel economy. I bought it from Hinterland Toyota in October last year. I have had it back there twice and Llewellyn?s in Ipswich once but they say there is no problem. I am getting about 12 l/100km on the highway and I towed a trailer the other day with 300kg in it and it went to 16l/100km. this is not right as I had the 2005 Hilux with the same motor getting a lot better fuel economy. my fuel bill has gone up about $300.00 per month and I am doing less driving. Nobody seems to help as they say it needs to be run in. I have done 25000km. I have spoken to other Hilux owners that do not have this problem. This is my Fourth new Hilux since 1995 and at this stage will be my last. I am not looking forward to towing my Caravan as I will probably have to fill up every 300km. I do not know what else I can do as the service departments keep telling me it is normal. I do know that the next step I do take if this is not resolved will be legal advice.

  • I bought 2010 hilux brand new from Toyota which has been manufactured in Thailand in May production.I was driving on open motorway and felt steering shaking when it is near 90 to 100km..The vehicle just had done near 800km. I dropped at Toyota they swap front to back tyres and said all good to go.That problem was still there . Now when you apply brakes to stop, the vehicle starts vibrating.It got me mad to have problem like this. The vehicle goes and repairs done on rear wheel.That rear vibrations has stopped but there is front vibration near front you feel at speed of 50 to60km when you hold at that speed.All the wheels has been balanced and wheel alignment has been done. nothing getting better. Toyota says all good they cant find anything. I drive the vehicle it has done 5000km within 6 months but still same problem with steering shaking. 4 times done 3 to 4 days in Toyota workshop but cannot be fixed. This was my 6th vehicle from Toyota NZ thought this will last me for long but it is giving me problems. If anyone let me know the problems and where it can be fixed . Got Toyota warranty.

  • I'd get the Mitsi if it was up to me there current ute is very good for all uses. is yours a auto? and does it have a trans cooler because mine overheats and it is a pain in the arse.

  • Jason do us all a favour and go and buy another rodeo as they appear to be up to your standard. I have an 05 sr duel cab 4x4 and have had no issues at all. It tows our caravan over to the south coast of NSW every Jan with (2 adults and 3 kids) the tray would have almost a tonne and the van is 17'also fully loaded without a problem. The funny thing is I had a rodeo before the hilux and found I did not have enough gears on the hills. Chalk and cheese I think.

  • Well your lucky then Shane we are not overly impressed with ours having come out of a rodeo and previously a ranger the Hilux does not stack up as well as a work vehicle. and pleas don't try and tell me you haven't heard of overheating autos this is the single biggest complaint these cars have had. And the headlights are crap on mine I'm getting some driving lights fitted because in the bush you just cant see.

  • I work on a mine site and I'm not a fan of our hilux work vehicles, our 105 series with 320000km feels brand new compared to the hilux's which have less than half the km, hilux isn't as tough these days and ours are very rough rattly and noisy, frequently requiring maintenance, if its gotta be a new Toyota its gotta be landcruiser or nothing

  • I'm employed by Rio Tinto and drive Hilux's each and everyday of my working career and have never had an issue with brakes, overheating auto's or so called pointless headlights ... mmm !! Rio Tinto buy 'em buy the hundreds .. literally. Why - because they are a damn good work horse and one of the best the market has to offer. My sister and her husband who live in Darwin have a 3 yr old SR5 and apart from a faulty CD player has apparently been a good ute.

  • I got one of these as my work hack. No mention on here of a recall for the useless brakes pointless headlights or auto that overheats if you use it in stop start traffic. Thats what i would like Toyota to fix.
