Do they think we?re that gullible?

image The studio looks the same, the leader board is the same and the tongue in cheek delivery is the same - although the latter comes across as more than a little forced.

Nearly missed the debut of the Australian version of Top Gear on Monday night.

Like everyone else I’d been waiting with bated breath for the premiere of the show, but in the end I got caught up at work and completely forgot about it.

Fortunately, someone recorded it for me.

What an anti-climax!

For all intents and purposes the show is a carbon copy of the British version, right down to the Pommy sounding Charlie Cox who seems more by design than default to have taken on the role of Jeremy Clarkson.

The studio looks the same, the leader board is the same and the tongue in cheek delivery is the same - although the latter comes across as more than a little forced.

They’ve even replicated the Stig, right down to the same coloured suit and helmet - although they couldn’t come up with a better name for him.

Who is he?

To be honest, who gives a flying duck?

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not sour grapes, because I for one didn’t apply for a job but then I’d probably be as boring as bat shit in the role anyway.

Nup. I’ve nothing against SBS’s choice of presenters, but surely to God the producers could have tried something a bit different?

Why didn’t we get a female presenter for instance?

But of course that would have meant departing from the formula – the successful formula.

Do they really believe Aussies are that gullible?

Do they really think we’re going to sit there for eight weeks, night after night and swallow the same old storylines recycled all over again?

Surely not?

For me the highlight of the first show had to be cartoonist Warren’s bizarre shark fishing expedition in a converted Mini Moke.

Granted, that took more than a little imagination, but you can see how they segued their way there.

Australia . . . famous for . . . our beaches . . . and our predators . . . especially sharks . . . I know let’s weld a cage on a car and go diving for while pointers.

Brilliant!

So, what next?

How long will it be before they pop an amphibious conversion into Sydney Harbour and bravely set out across the Tasman for New Zealand?

Because, in the end, it’s got nothing to do with cars really - it’s all about entertainment.

The original might have started out as a straight motoring show, but it has evolved into something very different, a new and pure form of entertainment, revolving around the verbal sparring between Clarkson, May and Hammond.

Rather than allow the show and presenters to grow in their new found roles however SBS has made a bee line straight for the finish line - don’t pass go, don’t collect $200 and don’t worry about paying your dues.

Only time will tell whether this quantum leap is justified or whether it is perhaps overly ambitious - but with seven episodes to go I’m left wondering whether its going to be worth the effort?

  • What were they thinking ...!

Seriously, the attempts to ‘match’ the UK version are a bit flat.  I thought the 4wd Lexus/Subaru/Range Rover trip was quite good, but I’d like to see more stuff relevant to ordinary Australians like cheapest petrol of the week, or vehicle repair scams, or excessive servicing prices charged by ‘authorised’ dealers, or insurance policy comparisons, etc

  • I love motor cars, racing and anything that has an engine and wheels, this show is very average, the presenters should host a show on grass growing because that is how boring they are.

  • I eagerly awaited for Top Gear to come to Oz, I was so disappointed when it did,  In the whole show and I thought, welllll give it a second chance, but the second episode did not change my opinion, the team are definately not the ones for the job, they’re just too animated for me I’m a afraid, the show dosen’t even come within cooee to the uk show.
I watched 2 episodes, painful, but, no thanks I will not be watching the oz version until some people or some things improve, definately will be a good show until this is done? but I have my doubts.

  • Do any of you actually watch the English Top Gear?
The show consists of 3 English Knobs, poking fun at each other, doing silly things with vehicles( ie constructing convertible people movers and boats out of cars) and driving cars fast, in ways they probably aren’t intended to be driven. Watching Jeremy in a 4 wheel drift in a Bentley, is one of my TV highlights. If you look at their website, they admit that they have moved from a purely car-related show, to entertainment. The frustrations is not seeing cars that are relevent to the Ozzie market. No Elfins or Aurion TRDs( well they are attempting to compete in the performance market, so we need to see them up against relevent competition).
We need this show and we need Charlie to Learn how to drift a HSV version of the Statesmen, without lifting off until the tyres are history. Then he will have graduated…
No TV channel is going to invest big bucks in a new format, so use it or lose it.

  • holden vs ford isn’t a story , maybe nissen godzilla vs bmw 301 then we can see the
diference between japan vs europe .What about hyundi vs proton vs kia etc.

  • We must remember the early shows from the original Top Gear were a little ordinary too so maybe we should give them a chance.

I watched the second show, as people say it is a carbon copy, maybe they could have done a little different and maybe had a lady Presenter as well but I guess all in all it isn’t to bad. I do think they are trying to emulate the other show a bit much.

  • I have eagerly waited to watch these first episodes.  I am so disappointed.
Charlie Cox - is it just a teething problem or am I the only one in Australia that finds this guy irritating.  Just because it had Ford V Holden does not give it any Aussie credit points.  So far the show is lame.
In fact, I am almost offended to think that some idiot needs to copy a Pomm show (which I have enjoyed in its own context) without considering that we could create our own slant and take ownership of our own program.
‘Moke in the water’ with Sharks! Please!!  Why not cover three cars with Vegemite and count how many flys are atracted to the worsed car! HaHaHa.  Just inspire us with road tests of interesting cars.  Example - race a Ferrari 430 against a V8 supercar on a track just to see the similarity, or not!  Cars please not Mythbusters.
I bet that international pay tv will continue to show the English version with subtitles and will not look twice at putting our rehashed version on their screens.
Why don’t they cover those guys with Vegemite and see how many flys are attracted to the one who needs to leave! HaHaHaHa
    Fix up this show, please!

  • I actually didn’t mind it. (I missed the first one but didn’t think the second was a let down). It is Topgear after all, so it had to have some resemblance to the UK version. And you can’t get rid of the ‘hooning’ otherwise the show will just turn into the boring Ch 9’s ‘The Car Show’. The only problem I had was that sometimes Aust TG seemed a little too scripted. It seemed you could tell when it was them just having a laugh (unscripted) when what they said was generally funny and then when their words just seemed to loose its ‘fun’ (when it was scripted). The producers should just let the hosts have more freedom with what they say. I also think they should scrap the “Star in the reasonably priced car”. That (most of the time) used to bore me in the UK version, only actually watching it when it was someone I knew. I can’t really think of many Australian celebrities that I know of, so obviously it is going to bore me further still in the Australian version. On a different note I would love to see the American Topgear played on TV. It still has the UK hosts but features American celebrities - which we all know of. All in all though we should be a bit fairer on Aust. TG. Good works guys, I have always been avid of Topgear and will continue to watch the remaining Australian episodes.

  • Man… episode two was painfull.  I lasted maybe 20 minutes.  Charlie stinks, and so does that little fella.  Have you noticed the only people laughing at the jokes are the presenters.

Mick of Brissy Posted on 08 October 2008 8:50pm
  • Get rid of Charlie Cox,the other pair I can just live with.Needs to be more detail and information on the cars tested and I mean tested, not abused by a bunch of hoons!!I! I can see that on any street on any day.Surely they can come up with some innovative entertainment without resorting to stupidity.Even TG UK does that at times.(the one in USA with slogans on their cars)Without Charlie Cox,the show might stand a chance.

Tezza of Young NSW Posted on 08 October 2008 8:08pm
  • Here are some suggestions which may improve show:-
    1) Replace Charlie with a character like Sam Newman
    2) Warren to become main presenter
    3) longer road tests aimed at car enthusiasts, more substance less hooning
    4) Test Ford G6ET vs $55K euros eg BMW, Merc, Jag, VW - be parochial

  • Just a quick update.
Viewers deserted the show in droves on its second outing.
The producers had reportedly hoped to crack the 1 million mark, but got only 674,000 viewers instead - 250,000 less than for the premiere.
In its defence it was a long weekend in NSW, but that doesn’t explain how the show managed to finish last in its 7.30 timeslot - behind Border Security of all things.
    How embarrassing . . .

    PS. Dear A Boveitall,
That’s a bit below the belt. I find point form works really well for obviously gifted people such as yourself who would otherwise have difficulty grasping the point (of the story that is).

Chris Riley Posted on 08 October 2008 12:23pm
  • Honestly I thought TG Australia was better than I expected. Sure, they were trying to imitate the original but it is called TOP GEAR AUSTRALIA after all, plus people want something familar that they can associate with. Wait a few weeks and I am sure they will develop their own unique styles and mannerisms.

balwyn calling Posted on 07 October 2008 9:51pm
  • What is the show about. Where can car owners do the speed, do the burn outs with out bringing attention to oneself from the boys in blue. I suppose we could go to our nearest airstrip and do smokies and toss the word TOP GEAR around. That should save us from being called hoons.

Garry Jones Posted on 07 October 2008 7:29pm
  • Thought I’d give it a second look - why bother.  If I want to watch an imitation of Top Gear I could probably find something on YouTube.  Just let these guys be themselves rather than cardboard cut-outs of the original presenters.  I ended leaving after 30 minutes to watch a tape of the SuperBike Race from the night before.

Anon of Gold Coast Posted on 07 October 2008 4:53pm
  • The show. Why spoil a good thing. Let me tell you something about fords & holdens.
Sorry I fell asleep oh yeah Top Gear Australia yeah but no, Good from a far but far from good. Charlie is not the right man for the Job by the way. Big Top Gear UK fan as for the aussie version maybe Grant Denyer. He’s actually interested in cars & doesn’t sound like such a snob.

    andrew Posted on 07 October 2008 4:24pm
  • My dog takes more interesting dumps than the Oz version of TG. Poor ol’ SBS has fallen into the trap of the commerical networks and gone for the safe, tried and true version and come up with 3 heads on a stick who have the collective personality of a smelly dunny brush. Ouch

Vince of melb Posted on 07 October 2008 12:56pm
  • Last night’s show was a big improvement on the first episode, I think this show will get even better in the coming weeks, as the host develop a rapport with each other, and become more relaxed in front of the camera. Don’t give up on the show yet. Ok, sure it’s not going to beat UK Top Gear, but it will still be a nice filler in, whilst waiting for the next series of UK Top Gear.

greg of Brisbane Posted on 07 October 2008 10:08am
  • I watched it for the first time last night and I enjoyed it. No poms and there were Holdens and Fords exactly what i was looking for in the Aussie version. I look for ward to the next episode showcasing the Mercedes Black.

    dave Posted on 07 October 2008 9:00am
  • Just watched the second episode. Am only a bit unhappy that Charlie didn’t hang the tail out in the Ford GT 40. I guess he will learn how to burn rubber like Clarkson. Please Charlie, when you get hold of a GTR, try to destroy all 4 tyres.
We need a good Aussie vehicular entertainment show. It will find its feet, or it will not. Seems OK so far.

    mark Posted on 07 October 2008 2:01am
  • I agree with the other comment but have to say I thought it could have been worse.  I think they were trying a little too hard and could have brought some different ideas from the U.K. version.  Not a bad effort but at the end of the day I think every Top Gear fan will prefer the U.K. version.

Michael Edwards Posted on 06 October 2008 10:20pm
  • “Because, in the end, it’s got nothing to do with cars really - it’s all about entertainment.” Really? You don’t say? Next guest on Mastermind 2008 is Chris Riley. Subject: The painfully, eye-peelingly obvious. Stick to your point form car “reviews” champion.

  • It was a forgetable show, doubt if i`ll watch it again…

marc of melb, Posted on 06 October 2008 5:52am
  • Shitty. It was terrible! The idea’s in the magazine are good… But on the show. The hosts are terrible. The only decent host is James May…. well, his imposter. The Hamster imposter was TERRIBLE and the Clarkson imposter is trying to play god.

    Absolutely horrible.

  • I tape every Monday night. It very good, excellent, cool & the best car show ever in Australia. I watch it after I recorded the show. It was very Excellent. I like to the Car Show.

Car Lover Posted on 05 October 2008 2:24pm
  • i agree, i could not believe that they replicated the UK show, right down to the camera angles. I believe the host application forms speciffically said do not apply if you think you are a Clarkson, Hammond or May, and in the end thats exactly what we got.

Sam Scutchings of Echuca Posted on 05 October 2008 10:51am
  • I found it predictable and unimaginative,  it was too close to the UK Top Gear.  I switched off at the 1st commercial break.

Nick Gye of Perth Posted on 05 October 2008 1:47am
  • I think the problem is that there was a distinct lack of passion, for which the UK Top Gear is renowned.

Unlike Chris Riley, I do have something against the presenters - they were rubbish. But who’s to blame for them being rubbish? My guess is it’s the producers. I don’t think that the presenters were allowed to do and be what they wanted. I hope that’s the case, otherwise the presenters suck. And I was thinking they sucked when I saw their final video submissions on SBS website. Have a look at them - they are very very boring. Almost as boring as the first episode, just not as long.

The only thing they should have copied from the Brits was the passion and dedication that came from each presenter, regardless of their ‘role’.

    cucka Posted on 04 October 2008 7:40pm
  • I am totally bored with the UK version now anyway so to get me to sit through a entire episode deserves some credit.
I actually liked the soft roader challenge, I would rather see cars that have relevance to me than say a Ferrari racing a jet. Although they never actually came up with a result or really compared the cars ! So what was the point.
As for the presenters, the show would be so much better if they were actually allowed to let there real personalities show. Rather than coppy the humor (if you can really call it that) of the UK guys.

stewart of sydney Posted on 04 October 2008 2:35pm
  • Definately an anti climax, and complete and utter straight rip off of the been there done that british formula (boring). In particularily though, I thought it was very cheeky that SBS constantly ran the Clubby vs F6 adds obviously to grab an audience and in the end it turns out however thats in episode 2!!! So I sat through 11/2hours of un-Australian guff for nothing. Cheap trick SBS!

John Smith of Brisbane Posted on 04 October 2008 2:49am
  • Well I thought the show had a few good moments,  but also a few cringe moments. I give the guys credit for giving it a go , so I will give it a go . The problem is we are influenced by the uk show, which is 1 of the best bits of tv you can watch. I think if the uk show wasnt there to compare to it would have been rated much better . In saying the uk version is great , it has many incarnations in the past to become the show it is now. So australia don’t rite it off just yet. Goodluck aussie topgear.

michael roberts of aus Posted on 03 October 2008 9:01pm
  • Not sure I’ll be able to stay with this show for the whole series - probably just for the car bits. Can’t say I’m that taken with the presenting just yet, particularly the machine gun presenting style of Steve Pizatti. Maybe he’ll settle down after a few episodes. here’s hoping. Maybe they’ll all grow on me….....hopefully…....or not.

Noel Mackey of Gladstone Qld Posted on 03 October 2008 8:40pm
  • I watched it and thought here was no chemistry and it was so obvious they where modelled on the UK presenters. I was bored and everyone I know who saw it said it was boring, unfunny and cheesy.

Mike N of Southbank Posted on 03 October 2008 4:06pm
  • Anti climax it was, rather watch the original Top Gear. The Australian versio was sooo copy cat and predictable. Why couldn’t SBS allow us to enjoy a unique and entertaining show by presenters that are confident enough to create their own style?
BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL FOR ME

Mal Irving Posted on 03 October 2008 2:28pm
  • I agree they could change a few things they dont have to copy word for word of the pommy show

    paul Posted on 02 October 2008 11:09pm
  • Top GEar Australia is pathetic and quite frankly I had to force myself to watch the full entire episode as I fell asleep in a number of occasions. I can’t stand listening to the voices of the boring presenters who brought nothing to the table. They were all driving 4WD and spoke absolutely nothing about them, the snow vs sand story was completely pointless, as was the lambo and porsche story. BORING!!! Bring back the english version PLEASE!
