Official photos of the 2009 Subaru Liberty and Outback have surfaced with the model?s launch in Japan today.

The Japanese versions will go on sale there mid-year, while the Liberty will be launched on the Australian market in September.

The fifth-generation of the popular Liberty – known as the Subaru Legacy in overseas markets – is built on a new platform and will arrive with a raft of tech improvements, including the choices of a 3.6-litre six-cylinder horizontally opposed boxer engine , and a six-speed manual or continuously-variable transmissions.

The two other engines are both 2.5-litre four-cylinder boxers, one of which gets a boost from turbocharging.

Australia will get a six-speed manual diesel Outback in November, with the engine that has already gone on sale in the current model Outback in Europe developing 108kW at 3600rpm and 350Nm from 1800rpm. Fuel economy is said to come in under sub-7.0 litres/100km.

Both 2.5-litre four cylinder and 3.0-litre six cylinder boxer engines are expected to carry over and diesel buyers will be pleased with the arrival of Subaru's first 2.0-litre turbo-diesel.

The Liberty is wider and longer than the current model –the American version is even wider again – and should offer a large increase in both passenger and cargo area.

Safety gets a big kick-up in the new models, with equipment on offer including an engine cradle that folds to isolate the block from the cabin in a crash, knee airbags, and a reversing camera with factory-fitted satnav. There are also rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights and push-button start options.

Of course, both nameplates get Subaru’s all-wheel drive system, and the dynamic chassis concept from the new Impreza and Forester.

Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior says the new Liberty has all the right ingredients to make a strong play in the market.

“Safety, performance and style are all key ingredients in the new generation Liberty mix. Combined with the high quality engineering for which Subaru is renowned, it represents a formidable package.”

“Liberty and Outback will build strongly on the respected records of the current cars, at the same time maintaining the fun driving that’s at the heart of every Subaru.”

Pricing will be revealed at the Liberty’s Australian launch in September.

  • Ihave had 5 Subaru's over the last 18 years. My current one is an outback purchased in 2000. It has been a wonderful car. Earlier this year I thought I might trade it in on demo model 2008. I was offended by the low price the Suburu dealer offered me. My car was in mint condition and had only done 72.000kms. Not willing to the budge, I told the dealer I would shop elsewhere. I still have my subaru. Was thinking about the new diesel, but will wait until next year. Perhaps you might bring out a more attractive model. The space saver wheel concerns me also.

  • 4 libertys in my family, I own 2. a gen2 RX and a gen4 GT. The best looking models. I have been driving subies for decades Was waiting to upgrade the gen2 but might just get the VW R36 instead. SUBARU Stop hiring Korean designers....

  • Subaru applauds the launch of it's new... Ahem. Kia.

  • Regardless of what others say... I like it. Just as long as the styling hasn't added any beef and the original intent of the cars remains. Will certainly change the boring look of the current Outback and anyone who doesn't like the looks can button up their cardigan and walk away.

  • If [Parent Company] Toyota ever decided to create specialised categories for the World's Ugliest car, then this would win Hands Down!

  • Yes the back end belongs to Hyundai Sonata/Grandeur but the front end actually belongs to..wait for this...HOLDEN EPICA! Their designs has gotten worse. Have they gotten so low in copying designs from other car companies?

  • After all these years I can't believe car makers are still using ugly-as-sin fake wood mouldings in cars. I do like the back of these cars, liberties have always had it in the booty department, not completely sold on the front styling yet, I'll reserve judgement until I see it in the flesh.

  • Move to Audi and experience low resale and high repair costs. It funny how when the new impreza was released in 2008 there were cries of ugly, would never buy one, funny thing is Subaru have increased there market share in Australia from 3.9% to 4.5%. Beauty is

  • oh dear... those upswept headlights are bit awkward looking from the front

  • Subaru designers certainly know how to create a practical car ... but they do NOT know how to create a good looking car ... :-(

  • the back looks like a hyundai sonata.

    Chris Posted on 26 May 2009 2:57pm
  • It has Looks, that only a mother would love.

Gerry K of Melbourne Posted on 26 May 2009 2:12pm
  • E-class coupe rear lights? Or did merc copy from this? Or both from the hyundai sonata?

  • I don't really think I'll be buying another Liberty. An absolute deal breaker would be whether they have a full size spare in the new model. I don't think that any car which includes a space saver tyre should get a 5 star safety rating

  • The new models look like a cross between the Camry Altise, the new Mazdas, and a Hyundai Sonata. No matter which way you look at them, they're ugly - and a step backwards in appearance. In addition, why do Subaru always indulge in so much black and charcoal grey in the interiors? Not a practical colour in our climate, and the lack of choices in interior colours is disappointing. I guess the prices will increase, too? I want to buy a Subaru this year, but the current models look like a more attractive buy.

  • I'm also a multi Liberty Gen 1, Gen 2 and Current Gen 3 Spec B 3ltr. Love the quality, love the resale. Also like the differentiation from most other Japanese stuff. Will reserve judgement on looks till I see it in flesh. Interior looks great. As for frameless doors, like the uniqueness but if they can make em quieter with conventional doors then that's OK. I just hope they don't lose their uniqueness and become just another premium Japanese brand. As for a switch to Audi, well I've considered that too (as well as VWs offerings) but take a close look at running costs and depreciation before considering such a move. I tossed up between a A4 quattro turbo and Spec B and decided after all sums done the liberty better long term solution. Regrets? Perhaps should have bought the 2.5T - lighter, quicker, less thirsty, but $2K dearer. But biggest dilemma will be what to replace it with in 18 months.

  • funny how people are complaining and saying bye bye Subaru after so many years of loyalty Wasn't the main problem that everyone was complaining that their cars were too safe and bland in style and now they try something different the other half cries, can't please everyone but I think it's a case of Impreza here, once seen in the metal everyone will start liking again...

Baaron of Sydney Posted on 26 May 2009 12:13pm
  • wow i love the sedan - what a beautiful car - and with a 3.6l 6cyl - WOW shame about the outback & wagon though!

Will of Killara Posted on 26 May 2009 12:13pm
  • I'm a current Outback owner. This new one is as ugly as sin. Sorry Subaru, I'll be buying elsewhere.

Rob Possingham of WA Posted on 25 May 2009 11:09pm
  • That Outback looks atrocious (and I'm on my third Subaru and second Outback)... no more pillarless windows? Looks I'll be moving to Audi after 20 years of Subaru's.

    Mike B Posted on 24 May 2009 10:57pm
  • you've got to be joking! take a look at the car from front on - now THAT's a car!

subedubie of melbourne Posted on 24 May 2009 1:59am
  • One of Subaru's uglier efforts, and that's saying something.
