Subaru Impreza wagon returning

The Impreza XV will be previewed at the Geneva Motor Show next month and looks basically similar to a car sold in the USA as the Outback Sport (pictured above) even though it is based on the Impreza.

An old favourite is coming back to the Subaru family as bait for younger buyers.

It's the Sportswagon, a value-added wagon that first hit the road in Australia in the early 1980s.  This time around it will be a tickle-up on the Impreza hatch with a pricetag just below $30,000.

The Impreza XV, as it is called, will be previewed at the Geneva Motor Show next month and looks basically similar to a car sold in the USA as the Outback Sport - even though it is based on the Impreza.

"The Sportswagon started in the early 1980s with the Leone. It was the original idea to transform a wagon into a lifestyle recreational vehicle.  In those early days we put things on it like white Sunraysia wheels, bullbars and roof racks," says Nick Senior, managing director of Subaru Australia.

"That crossed over with the L-Series in 1983 and went right through until Impreza was launched in 1993. Then we did a few years of Sportswagons on the Impreza hatch in LX all-wheel drive specification.    When the Forester arrived we phased it out."

But times have changed, and Senior says there is a gap in the Subaru line-up for something with a chunkier look to run below the Forester.  "Over time the Forester has obviously grown and we see an opportunity under the Forester for a lifestyle recreational vehicle. It's based on the Impreza hatch, with some extra versatility and extra ground clearance," Senior says.

"The XV is being shown at the Geneva Motor Show and we expect it early in quarter three."  The current car closest to the old Sportswagon is an Impreza in the USA called the Outback Sport - even though it's not an Outback.

It gets the familiar two-tonne paintwork which has been on the Sportswagon from the start, as well as raised suspension, a roof rack and heated front seats.  The XV will look significantly different from the American car, with a different treatment on the grille, sills and bumpers. The exact specification has not been set, but Senior sees a major opportunity.

"I think one of the most exciting things for us is that it will be marketed at a younger audience. It gives us the chance to speak to Gen- Y and do something a little bit different.  "We haven't had that opportunity in the past. We can have a bit of fun with this and learn."

The price will undercut the Forester and the XV is expected to account for around 10 per cent of Impreza sales in Australia.  "I think it's around about 100 a month. That's about 10 per cent of Impreza sales," Senior says.

"I think it will be largely incremental. There is always a bit of crossover, but of the 100 I would hope that 60-70 per cent are incremental."  Senior is expecting a big year for Subaru Australia after a major turnover of models in the second half of last year.

"We've got a full 12 months of Liberty and Outback, as well as diesel and Exiga. We have a Forester diesel to join us in June and the reaction to the Outback diesel has been fantastic."

  • For anyone thats looking at that photo, and talking like they can do better than subaru, pleeaaasse! Take some time, go to the dealership. theres one in Melb on Lorimer St in the Docklands, have a proper look. I'll be surprised if anyone sat in the red Subaru Impreza WRX STI hatch sitting in the corner near the window on the second floor and said pick your game up Subaru. Oh yeah, they're ahead of the game all right, but they gotta bring out some cheap skates too. And for those who think the figures are dropping, think again. Outback is winning best car awards, Forester is the best selling CUV/SUV in the country 2008 and 2009... And I know cause I just bought one on backorder... ETA 3 months. Any questions? Didnt think so.

  • That's not a wagon! My VT Commodore is a WAGON! This Impreza a Silly little girls hatch back with ugly silver paint on the wheel arches. I fit a 4 seater couch in my wagon, You could not put a Chair in the back of that wannabe wagon.

  • Umm its the normal hatch with silver bumpers its not a wagon. It just painted the same as old RV wagon use to be. Its still a hatch not a wagon.

  • I'm surprised at the negative comments, Whilst I'm not wrapped on current styling, all the makes nowadays appear bulky and bulgy. Having owned Subarus for 26 years with no mechanical problems to speak of I guess we are stuck with the styling however why do we need all the electronic stuff, something else to go wrong. Who needs an electronic accelerator. I deliberately bought an 05 Forester, the last of the cable throttles. If someone made a basic car with no electronics and wind up windows they would sell well properly marketed and service costs would drop Anyway I wont move away from Subaru, a great car, my 1985 L series I bought new is a testament to that (345K and still going strong) and the 05 Forester is just as good

  • Why would you want to buy any car that is price fixed in the Melbourne Market. They then top it off with super average customer service and terrible trade in prices. It seems they have it all. Except for selling big numbers of cars that is.

  • You have to feel sorry for Subaru Australia. They have no say in what comes out of Subaru Japan. They must just cringe when they see what rubbish they have to try and sell. Mechanically they are always good but their interiors are some of the worst in the business and their exteriors are painful to look at. To think that in 99/2000, they were selling Imprezas, Libertys and Foresters by the boatload and couldn't keep up with demand. Then Subaru went looking for a larger Audience and their sales have never been as good. Subaru needs to sack their entire management and start again. So much potential in the product but buttheads making bad decisions are ruining the company

  • I don?t know what?s been happening at Subaru of late but none of their current cars look any good. It seems like they?re always playing catch up.. The last Liberty was a classy looking car but the current model looks like an older Kia Magentis. Pick up your game Subaru!!
