The Proton price fighter in the S16, a four-door sedan with a 1.6- litre engine, and the company is aiming for around 1800 sales a year.

The price line for new cars in Australia has just dropped to $11,990 - including on-road costs - thanks to Proton.

The Malaysian carmaker has acted early to head off the potential price threat from Chinese imports, and to try and reach critical mass in local showrooms before the Geely and Great Wall brands gain traction in 2010.

The Proton price fighter in the S16, a four-door sedan with a 1.6- litre engine, and the company is aiming for around 1800 sales a year. The S16 is a major gamble for Proton, which has never gone beyond a bit player in Australia despite good looking cars including the baby Savvy. It has struggled to meet quality expectations and performance targets for local buyers.

"We're doing this to establish the brand in Australia. Set the foundations for the future," says Proton boss, John Startari. "Proton has been in Australia for 14 years, but the results over the years don't represent the true potential of the brand."

He believes the S16, which was originally intended as Australia's cheapest four-door sedan but now also undercuts the $12,490 Suzuki Alto hatch, shows what Proton can do when it is serious about selling. "The product is the strongest point of the car. The price has been set up intentionally to draw attention to the car, and people will be pleasantly surprised when they drive it," Startari says.

The only real shortcoming is a single driver's side airbag. Otherwise the car comes with aircon, power steering, remote central locking and CD sound. There is no automatic, at least at first. Proton says it will come early 2010. Proton also boasts about 82kW of power, economy of 6.3L/100km and Lotus-tuned suspension.

It has signed Miss Universe Australia, Rachel Finch, to tout for the S16. Startari is hoping the car works and says Proton has done all it can to make it a success, including an early bonus from the import duty car for automotive imports from January 1. "We're on sale from December 1 and, at this stage, we'll hold the price into the forseeable future. The exchange rate is also helping," he says. "We have already factored the five per cent duty cut into the price of the car. In the 2010 financial year we're intending to sell 1800 S16s.

That will take our volume to just over 3500, then moving up to 5000 cars after that."

  • I've just ordered one after driving it last week. Optioned alloys, but otherwise base madel. A far better car than the Barina, Kia or the Alto to drive, and cheaper. My sister had a 95 Satria, and they've come a long way since then. And a cheap car for daily driving allows a couple of classics instead of tying up my cash in a commuter. All I can say is that I'm happy for the money. It was either that, or a second hand Lancer with 100K on the clock. This way I get 3 years of warranty and road side assistance. And I won't lose heaps of money on it like that junker VE I bought new from Holden. This way I have fun cars for the weekend and a sensible daily driver that's cheap to buy and own. I still can't believe what I got for the money.

  • Don't buy Protons. Useless cars. In Malaysia its not doing well. People still buy them because they are cheap. But the car is crap. The Malaysian government impose very high tax on other car makers to that Proton can sell their cars without competition.

  • I'm waiting to pick one up. Paid a bit extra for a dealer fitted spoiler and black paint. The marketing certainly worked for me, rather than getting a second hand car the price was enough to tempt me into my first ever new car. ( Mind you the main family car cost more than 3 times as much second hand ). Should be a great commuter car for me, and Alloy's, upgraded radio, etc will give the family something to get me for Birthday's in the future.

  • Ive been trying to find out what assessories are available for the S16(Saga) or other Protons in Malaysia? Here only stone chip protector, side weathersheilds that I was going to add to the look of the car. Dealers also can do reverse parking sensors if needed. Is there a website you can by assessories including tshirts, keyrings etc from? I got free carmats with it that fit like genuine but they didnt have a Proton badge on them at all. As i previously said I still think its a great little sedan.

  • Just purchased a new white Proton S16 from Craig at Newspot Motors as a second family car & am very happy with it. For the $11990 drive away the suspension & steering handles better than the other lower priced cars & very quiet to drive. The 1.6 motor drove better than the smaller motors in the kia & Alto I drove paticularly up the hills. Also alot more room fot the kids, plenty of elbow & legroom & a very generous boot. Alot of the other brands of cars are only made in India,China or Korea anyway & so I'll stick with Proton with its ties with Lotus engineering & manufactured in Malyasia. Its a nice little car to drive.

  • I'm happy with mine, It cost a little extra with the black metalic, but looks great! For the Price I couldn't be happier! Think about it .... A/C Keyless entry 1/2 decent 'Clarion' stereo for the price (Will add front speakers soon though) Alarm & Imoboliser a 1.6 Motor whilst others offer 1.3 for $1000 more 4 Doors + Boot (resonable size too) I Love it!!!

  • And you know this how, Will Openheimer? Have you driven it? Or are you just some coward sitting behind a computer screen giving uninformed, idiotic opinions?

  • This looks like a promising deal. However, without the aid of Mitsubishi products, will this car actually suffice as being both cheap AND reliable? Let's hope $12k will be well spent for buyers out there.

  • Matt- At least with the Alto it'll be in one piece after 3 years

mr universe australia of the universe Posted on 24 November 2009 2:40pm
  • a $12,000 with Air Con, with a boot, why would anyone even consider the altos which has less power, less room, and only slightly less fuel consumption. I would buy one as a second car
