The Porsche 918 Spyder points the way of future sportscars.

Porsche has dropped another hybrid bombshell on the Geneva Motor Show.

German sportscar maker Porsche has dropped another hybrid bombshell on the Geneva Motor Show. In a shock move earlier today it revealed a mid-engine V8 hybrid supercar called the 918 Spyder, the spiritual successor to the Carrera GT. The car, along with a new Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, stole the show in a special preview of VW Group vehicles, which Porsche was invited to.

The 918 Spyder is the third hybrid in the Porsche stable and CEO, Michael Macht predicts that more will come. Although just a concept at this stage Macht has hinted that the Spyder 918 3.4-litre V8 plug-in hybrid will go into production. “Porsche has never before shown a concept car that wasn’t built,” he says. However, Macht says Porsche will wait for the show reaction before making any decisions. “But the Spyder points the way of future sportscars,” he says.

Porsche Australia spokesman, Paul Ellis, says that if there is enough interest from other right-hand drive markets, particularly the UK and Japan, Australia might get the car. “The drivetrain is extremely realistic,” he says.

The 918 Spyder prototype produces just 70g of CO2 per kilometre on fuel consumption of 3.0 litres/100km, combined with a zero to 100km/h sprint of under 3.2 seconds and top speed of 320km/h. In simulations the car produces a lap time on the Nordschleife of the Nurburgring of less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Carrera GT.

The 918 Spyder is one of three Porsche models with hybrid drive making their world debut at the show. The other two are the new Cayenne S Hybrid SUV with parallel full-hybrid drive and the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racing car with electric drive on the front axle and a flywheel mass battery.

  • why is it so ugly...? looks like a Elise, with 2 Veilside kits fitted. bet it is a bitch to wash... suppose those with enough money will find plenty of time in their retirement to practice, with a bucket and sponge

  • Wow after seeing the ugly fat arsed mistake the Panamera sedan is not to mention its a lot of ugly for 300 grand plus, the spider would really put the WOW back into the Porsche stable. In 10 to 20 years time the Panamera or the Pavalova as my mates like to call it will be the equal of the Aston Martin Lagonda of the 80's, not a pretty sight at all, but you know what they say about a fool and his money.

  • Porsche making a hybrid? They have got to be joking. These are going to be as popular as the 914. Who in their right mind would buy one of these? If one is suffering from "Green Guilt" then go buy a feel good Prius or similar and then have a regular GTS Turbo parked in the stable for when you have real urges. What a folly Porsche is undertaking........... Gotta be seen to be green!

  • More More More of these types of vehicles to be produced asap. I don't want to ride a bike or take public transport into work. THIS IS THE SOLUTION! How about a Hybrid/LPG or Hybrid/Diesel (Bio?) into the real work asap, hey VW?

  • I do like the Porsche concept. There talks about reviving the 928 model which John Newcome the Tennis player owned. I hope it will looked like that. But nothing the latest yet.

  • You're lagging. There are better stories out there on other sites. And with PHOTOS. Fail.

  • It only reaches that fuel consumption when its driven like a sedan. Give it stick and it will use petrol like any other supercar. Porsche haven't done anything to revolutionise the auto world, they have just found a guilt free way to make supercars.
