Mazda?s drive for fuel efficiency has hit a new high -- and low -- with the arrival of the diesel-powered Mazda3.

The claimed 5.7L/100km efficiency from the high-tech manual-only 2.2-litre turbo diesel will make the Mazda3 sedan and hatch the most fuel miserly models in Mazda's Australian range  beating even the baby 1.5-litre Mazda2.

With moderate sales expectation of just 100 a month Mazda will start the new diesel at $29,715, a premium of $2870 over the petrol Maxx Sport on which trim it is based but significantly it is $685 cheaper on the sticker price than the outgoing model and, Mazda claims, represents more than $2000 in better value with the inclusion of satellite navigation, Bluetooth and a multi-function HMI (human machine interface).

Mazda Australia boss Doug Dickson concedes that the lack of an automatic option for the diesel will hurt sales but sees no way around it in the immediate future.  "It would certainly be better if there was an auto option ... but there isn't," Dickson says. "It's hard to say just how much, but you could draw your own conclusions by looking at the traditional split of petrol sales which is about 60 per cent automatic.

"That's not to say diesel sales would go up by 60 per cent with an auto, but there would certainly be a significant number of buyers who would opt for that."  Coupled to a revised six-speed manual the Mazda3 Diesel is good for 110kWs and 360Nm.

  • Mazda is a crap make. My Mazda 3 Diesel had failed turbo, then failed timing belt, which caused destruction of the whole engine, and 2 months afterwards - blown starter motor. All those failures, when the car's warranty had just expired. You are taking a serious risk if you set your mind and wallet on Mazda!

  • Bugger the auto. The trannie cant handle the torque so it is always a detuned motor. I agree with the previous comment. Car steerers have no idea. We are trading from an Astra Diesel to the Mazda only because the Astra isnt imported at the moment and our 2006 Astra has done 136,000kms. A truly great drive.

  • Have just bought one and can't wait for delivery Monday! Was taken with the response and relatively good NVH (for a diesel). Well made, looks great and drove beautifully.

  • It amazes me how many car steerers there are out there. Doesn't anybody buy manual cars so they get the pleasure of the downshift into bends/ roundabouts, to balance the car as you go in, and drive it through the bend? (instead of braking an auto deep into the bend, then trying to restore some control. Don't even try to tell me about manual shift autos, they just don't cut it - you need a clutch to feed it in) I drive in heavy traffic every day, but I wouldn't buy an auto. The inconvenience in traffic is a small price to pay for the enjoyment of driving a manual when things open up. .. and nothing makes you more of a wanker than to have a performance car with a hot exhaust note, only to hear auto changes as they accelarate. Auto XR8's and the like should be banned.

  • looking at buying Mazda3 for the kids to share while at uni in the city, coming from the country auto diesel would be great for those long trips home, cheaper than the bus/plane

  • Really like the new Mazda 3's shape, unfortunately the diesel only comes in manual. It seems I must look at the Focus diesel that has 6 speed auto option for about the same price as the Mazda.

  • Mazda is really shooting itself in the foot without offering the Mazda3 diesel without a auto. There are many people who drive the VW Gold TDI auto and many of these buyers can not and will not buy a manual car, especially if they live in Sydney. The sad part is that the 2.2 engine is a good one, very strong, quick, economical, very smooth and almost vibration free, From inside the car you would never know that it is a diesel. We bought a new CX7 diesel almost a month ago and we are very impressed with the 2.2 diesel engine. I achieved 685kms out of my very tank of diesel - double the economy of my previous car. Again a real shame and sales loser for Mazda in not offering this engine in both models with an auto option.
