The Cruze hatchback and sedan last month outsold the Commodore for the first time ...

A wagon will soon join Holden’s best selling car, the Cruze.

The new wagon model to be released next year will not be built here but in South Korea even though the company admits it has the capacity to build them at its Elizabeth plant in Adelaide.

The Cruze hatchback and sedan last month outsold the Commodore for the first time to become the most popular Australian-made car. But when the third variant, a wagon, goes on sale early next year, it will be sourced from South Korea.

Holden spokeswoman Kate Lonsdale said the company had the capability to build the wagon at the Elizabeth plant in Adelaide, but have no plans to do so.

"Could we build it here? Absolutely, we have the capability to do so, and it is certainly something we can look at in the future, but by importing the vehicle we get a great opportunity to test the market's reaction to a wagon of this size," she said.

"We're still working out what the volumes would be and to tool up for a new variant where the volumes might be niche, we need to work out if it's a good business move," she said.

The Chevrolet version of the Cruze wagon, conceived by Cruze hatch designer Leigh Mitchell, will make its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

The Cruze has sold more than one million units globally since it was launched in 2009 and Holden executive sales and marketing director John Elsworth is looking forward to the wagon.

"Cruze wagon ticks all the boxes," he said – just not the one marked “Australian-made". We're confident Cruze wagon will take the nameplate from strength to strength and reach new customers who are looking for more versatility," Mr Elsworth said.

The new wagon is about 80mm longer than the sedan and boasts a 500-litre cargo space.

Holden won't release any details on what engines will be offered with the hatch until closer to its launch but expect the current engine line-up of two petrol and one turbodiesel to be replicated in the wagon range.

Also yet to be confirmed is the MyLink infotainment system that is being introduced on top-spec Cruze models this year, which integrates the owner's smartphone into the car, offering a link to playlists, photos, phone books, data, videos and even some satnav phone apps.

  • @ Max W of Aldinga Beach, try towing a caravan with your VW or another 4 banger. Remind me to wave to you parked on the side of the road as I cruise past in my 4.0L Falcon.

  • @ Robert (posted 15 Feb 7:25pm) - seems to really be letting his hatred of all things GM allow him to make a reasonable and informed decision. Such thinking isn't only biased, it is irrational. How about we wait until the car is on the showroom floor and available to test drive before we go running off at the mouth?

  • The Ford Focus wagon is a fantastic thing overseas. If Holden are going to import this piece of rubbish the PLEASE, PLEASE Ford give us the superior Focus wagon as a better option.

  • As an SUV hater, I can't wait to have a look at this one. I just cannot understand why other competitors have dropped medium sized wagons from their range. Our streets are full of them, but then we are wrinkly old f**ts !

  • The Cruze is so under powered in petrol form. Screamy, weak torqued 1.8...blah. Holden you need to do better. 2.8 V6 (GM engine ex SAAB) across the range. Now there is an idea, might even be able to lug this proposed wagon full of passengers stuff about!

  • @Max - VW are poor quality and breakdown all the time because they are so highly stressed. Give me the lazy torque of a big six anyday. Why are you so tight over a couple of bucks in fuel??

  • It's a sorely missed size - Corolla, Mazda (323 days), Ford (Laser), Lancer - even Camira (getting to ancient history), Sigma, Bluebird, Corona - they're all gone. i30 is the sole player (unless you go Euro), and Hyundai seem to be unable to supply them. I looked for an upmarket CRDI with the 6spd Manual very recently, only to be told that the only stocks of upmarket model were their very ordinary auto. Skip it - go to Ford instead, but unfortunately no wagon.

  • Get ready... goodbye Falcon 6 petrol. Goodbye Holden 6... Hello 4 cyl turbo's... Look at Europe... look at 2nd largest manufacturer... VW. Most VW products have low capacity hi tech engines. Aussie engines are high capacity low tech.
