First look: Mazda6 Sports hatch diesel

Mazda is borrowing some European ingenuity in positioning its new Mazda6 Sports hatch diesel as the performance car of its mid-size range.

With a pricepoint of $43,890, the turbo-diesel hatch is being pitched right into the European sports turbo-diesel territory of the Ford Mondeo, Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Passat, Renault Laguna and Peugeot 407.

The Mazda diesel also comes to market against the South Korean Hyundai Grandeur and the yet-to-be launched Honda Accord Euro turbo-diesel.

Complementing the hatch is the $36,690 diesel wagon, which is expected to garner most sales.

The Sports hatch is $2900 more than the petrol engine hatch while the wagon is $1490 more than the equivalent petrol wagon.

Performance is the key to the car's new found status.

A new 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine replaces the old 2.0-litre unit and eclipse it and most of its direct European rivals on power and torque.

The 2.2 develops 136kW at 3500 revs and 400Nm from 1800 to 3000 revs.

Mazda has given it the title of a full-blown performance diesel.

Compared to the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, the larger capacity 2.2 increases power by 31kW and torque by 40Nm.

This translates into a zero to 100km/h of 8.5 seconds, 1 second faster than the old engine.

The same engine, in a slightly de-tuned form, is expected to go into the new Mazda3 when it arrives in mid-2009.

Mazda marketing boss Alastair Doak says there is an enthusiast niche for the Sports diesel hatch even though it is only available with a six-speed manual.

Doak is not concerned that the price difference between petrol and diesel will act as a disincentive to sales for the new turbo-diesel.

"People recognise that added benefits of performance and economy, as well as the environmental benefits of diesel," he says.

"There is a strong group of younger buyers who are also attracted to the technology of diesel.

"Roy Morgan research found recently that car enthusiasts are more likely to consider buying a diesel than a hybrid.

"With this car we deliver guilt-free performance driving performance."

Mazda claims the 2.2-litre 6 diesel will out accelerate the locally grown V8 performance sedans from Ford and Holden in fourth gear from 80kmh to 120km/h.

Despite the increase in performance the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel has a combined fuel economy figure equal to the 2.0-litre of 5.9 litres/100km. The wagon gets 6.0 litres/100km.

The hatch's C02 rating is 156g/km and the wagon 159g/km.

The 2.2-litre four is an exercise in refinement.

The engine has chain-driven balance shafts for low noise, vibration and harshness and adopts direct-injection common-rail technology for smoothness.

Variable geometry turbocharging is employed for low-speed response and reduced turbo-lag.

The comprehensive equipment levels in the wagon runs to 17-inch alloys, fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlights, dual-zone climate control, leather steering wheel, lumbar adjustment for the drivers' seat, trip computer, six-disc in dash CD stereo and steering wheel audio controls.

The hatch adds 18-inch alloys, leather trim, adaptive bi-Xenon headlights, front and rear parking sensors, eight-way electric drivers' seat and electric front passenger seat and a premium Bose 240 watt sound system.

Safety gear includes six airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, active front headrests and collapsible pedals.

The company expects to sell 70 a month, slightly less than the outgoing 2.0-litre diesel with sales split 50/50 hatch and wagon.

  • hmmm - yes, I did talk up the Falcon a bit. My bad. And I was a bit harsh on Mazda, they are good cars and I knew that. What annoys me is people saying their diesel car is some sort of performance benchmark. It's like that Golf ad - 'we can't all drive fast cars'. It is NOT fast. It has some 'zip' to it but the ad over exaggerates - just like this car. 400Nm is great and all but comparing the 6's performance to a V8? What were you when you wrote this - high? And I don't think this car will come in auto anytime soon. I believe it has something to do with the high level torque.

  • I have a few thoughts on this one..... First of all, i'll put my hand up and say im a salesman for a Mazda dealer. I've just come back to Mazda after a while away selling a Euro brand because of the quality and value coming out from Mazda. The Diesel will be the same safety spec as other Mazda 6 models will also have a 5 Star safety rating. There was a pretty decent uptake on the old Diesel 6 in the previous model and the Diesel 3 showed potential as well. This one on paper should be one of the best cars in it's category, and compared to the premium Euro brands, will be plenty of bang for buck too. As for me I'm a long time owner of a BA XR8 which I converted to LPG. Apart from the expense, I've had to do plenty of kilometres to make it economical. I found it also compromised the performance of the V8. Shame really as it kicked the backside of the Holdens at the time, and reliabilty issues have plagued my car. I've just parted ways with it, and got a pittance in return. Mazda 6 has always had strong resale and I'd bet it will continue to do so. If the new FG is so bloody good, why does my local dealer seem to need to discount the car by over 5-6K to sell them? All that does is devalue the car and push down resale on older models. I know how many people I speak to every week who I have to give the good news to about what their Falcon/Commodores are worth, and funnily enough people don't get their backs up about it too much. They seem to be happy to cut their losses and learn an expensive lesson. Aussies fortunately aren't stupid when it comes to buying cars. Generally speaking, they won't buy a car if it's rubbish. Strangely enough, I can't keep up with the enquiries from people wanting to get out of their big aussie sixes. Go figure! Do yourself a favour and take a 6 for a drive, then compare against the 40K + Falcon. P.S. I'm a Ford man from way back and still rate their performance as fantastic, but in LPG they just don't make the grade.

  • Mazda still have the lowest error rate or issue rate in the first warranty check period. Quality is very very high, working for an auto finance firm I enjoy reading the industry rags. I love diesel cars, I have owned a diesel Astra and rented various units in Europe as well as a Merc 320 Diesel. Price point is a tad high, for a couple of grand more there are plenty of 1-2 year old BMW 320d's out there with less then 15k on the clock. And as good a car as the Falcon is, the e-Gas has some crappy limitations with the gear box and no DSC. Resale vale in this segment is far superior. The Omega/Falcons are competing against govt lease vehicles after a 2-3 year role over. Just have to see the fields of cars parked at the auction sites in West Melb to see how slowly new units are moving and how many leased cars are comming up for auction. The Mondeo uses a ford/psa engine, from all technical accounts the new 6 diesel is far better (but yet to test drive), Mondeo is lovely to drive but I would hazard that the reason Mazda declined the use of that engine is that they could build one better themselves.

  • Where's the auto? Who in their right mind wants to paddle a diesel around on the school/shopping/commuter run?? The 6 is a very solid car, but the Mondeo is better value currently.

  • Wow! What a response. The G6 is good, and I do like it - but to the alex, who will buy the 6? Well Mazda fans will of course. Will there be many at that price range? I doubt it, but believe it or not - not everybody will buy the Falcon for whatever the reason. There's more to buying a car than just value, performance or worth. Bugger if I know what it is.

  • It would still be hard to beat a local V8 converted to lpg for power and economy. I am sure insurance and running costs would be cheaper. As for resale, I doubtt any car will have good resales in 3 years, but an lpg model might stand a better than average chance. Although good to see mazda trying a few more diesel models

  • Ok alex did some research on your G6. With the e-gas engine u get downgraded to a 4 speed auto? Yep - great technology there. Not to mention 17 inch wheels vs the mazda's 18s, and the mazda also has standard leather - not so in your falcon. And I have seen falcon interiors, hardly up to mazda standards - even more so with the standard cloth seats. So why would anyone fork out money for the falcon? Especially when it comes to trade in time and you are lucky to get 11k.

  • What's your falcon worth in 3 years alex? Bugger all. Why don't you factor this into your running costs and see which makes more sense then.

  • All the V8's have to do is down change from fourth to third and it's a different story. 0-100 in 8.5 seconds barely gives you performance bragging rights. Torque is only half the story. A VE Commodore, Aurion or even the Mitsubishi 380 will out accelerate it to 100km/h - little own the V8's. And $44,000? I hope you get more over the standard car than just so-called performance. For $40,000 you can buy the G6 Falcon - the luxury line-up - (and I know you're all probably sick and tired of hearing about this car - but it is a good car) and with the $4,000 you saved you can convert it to LPG. So you end up with car that is roomier, safer (5 star ANCAP), which has a nicer interior, better performance (0-100 in under 7.5 secs and while it may have 9 less Nm it has 55Kws more) and because you've converted the falcon to LPG it's also cheaper to run. So tell me, why would anyone fork out the money for this car?
