Commodore goes five-star

Holden has just drawn level with Ford in Australia's new-car safety race. Almost.

Its VE Commodore has qualified for the benchmark five-star safety rating awarded by the Australian New Car Assessment Program after a series of upgrades that bring it into line with the Falcon, which got the first five-star tick for a locally-made car earlier this year.

The problem, for the moment, is only the Omega sedan model in the Commodore range is rated as a five-star car.

The missing link for the rest of the Commodore family is a reminder light for the front passenger's seatbelt, something which will be added from January production at the GM Holden factory in Adelaide.

"We have made the commitment that the passenger seatbelt reminder will be standard across the range," Holden spokesperson, Kate Lonsdale, said.

Holden has made a series of safety upgrades to the VE range this year, adding extra side and side-curtain airbags. There is also an energy absorbing panel on the steering column shroud, and the seatbelt reminder on the $37,290 Omega.

"Of course it is disappointing that this five-star result does not apply to all Commodore sedan models, but we are confident Holden will address this next year,” said Michael Case, chief engineer with the RACV, one of the ANCAP partners.

“There was an issue with the lack of a front passenger seat belt reminder on the Commodore, but Holden has undertaken to incorporate these reminders into their production processes through 2009 to ensure other Commodore variants offer the same levels of protection."

While the Commodore has done well, the latest ANCAP crash-test results are not as good for some other makes and models.

The Ford Falcon ute and Honda's compact Jazz both got a four-star rating but the baby Nissan Micra only got a three-star score, no better than the company's four-wheel drive Navara and Isuzu's D-Max ute.

The Jazz missed a five-star tick because the top models with six airbags are not fitted with ESP stability control, which is essential for the top ranking in 2009, while Ford did not submit the ute for the pole-impact test necessary for the top mark.

“ANCAP is still waiting for the breakthrough of a five-star commercial vehicle so that tradespeople, couriers and other such vehicle users can have the same level of safety as company executives,” Case said.

And, once again, the pedestrian safety ratings — a new focus for ANCAP — were below the crash-test score in every case.

The Jazz rated three stars from four for pedestrian protection, the Falcon ute and Micra got two, but the Commodore, Navara and D-Max only got one each.

"These results are clearly disappointing," Case said.

  • This is all a bit silly. If I were to be in an accident I would be much better off in Australia's number 1 selling car than number 2 (Corolla) or worse 3 (Hilux) or many of the other top selling cars. This year the VE hits 3 years old, it has had significant running changes in terms of safety and economy and more are to come. People talk of the VE being substandard all i can say is The VE is number one. People shop around try various models and they still buy the Commodore. Hold has done a lot of good work with the VE. It sounds small, the Holden have at least 4 different tails lights, 5 if you count the HSV models in their sedans. Ford falcon has 1 tail light for all their fFalcon models.

  • The commodore substandard and is out of its legue in comparison to the falcon in almost every way. The Falcon was the first sedan of its class in the world to acheive the 5 star crash rating with out the use of the "optional" curtain airbags! Therefore, delivering real world saftey within its design. Anybody that has a love affair with a car simply because it is named holden should study the differences comprehensively. FACT: holden is more american than the Ford Australia (Falcon Range) yet most people dont realise this. I beleive this is the main reason why people purchase holden vehicles in the first place. They ( holden ) should stick to its real name.. General motors and create a logo that people can relate to world wide! PS: I Drive a Ferrari

  • Robert, I do agree that the FG is a great car but "better in every respect" just isn't right - credit where its due. The commodore has a better Lpg system then the falcon and is more reliable. ANCAP is utter crap, it's a patchy and flawed way of measuring a cars safety. It should only be used as a rough guide in regards to a cars structural integrity. The majority of new cars today will preform reasonably well in a crash, with falcon and commodore being among the best.

  • absolutely tragic that the commodore outsells the FG falcon by such a large margin when the falcon is clearly much better in every respect. Some say that the styling is a let down but recently i drove past a G6 falcon and did a double take. it was damn fine. somethings wrong when the excellent falcon is selling disappointingly but the crapodore is australias #1 selling car.

  • Few weeks ago it was the barina with curtain airbags and now it is the commodore with a warning light. Is the torana next? Again I say, ANCAP five star is sounding more like a joke. They are loosing credibility fast. I guess all I need is a warning light on VX then, 5*****.

  • It reminds me of a new car review in the '70s of the LX Torana from "Modern Motor" "People will buy it anyway because its a Holden" Holden's marketing people should be hot property.

  • ??? Did the Commodore really miss out on 5 stars becasue of a passenger warning light? I think there are enough warning lights and beeps already. Give me an air bag over a warning light. regardless, this shows the importance of competition.

  • This is certainly a nice catch up for some of the holden range. This is a demonstration of why we need two unique Australian cars. holden was forced competitively to up its game. holden stock levels of parts (seat/dash/steering column) must be too high to implement across the range. note - the scores were not even FG to late 2008 VE Omega late 2008 Omega Sedan: 33.45 out of 37 FG sedan: 34.61 out of 37 Interesting that it was the third VE tested, and yet they have not done a series two yet. There were no VE Utes submitted - that is also Odd

  • Gold Mike. Pure Gold. It's amazing though that the inclusion of a passenger seat belt light will earn the rest of the Commodore range a 5 star racing. Unlike the FG Falcons however, it seems the commodore achieved the 5 star rating utilising extra airbags rather then structural integrity.

  • Yet again he Commodore comes up almost as good as the Falcon, yet more people are still prepared to buy a sub standard car. Not as good in fuel economy. Not as good in safety. Not as good in power. Go figure.

  • Yeah, heres the thing, they spent 1 billion on it supposedly, but a huge chunk of that money was actually spent on making the car suitable for other markets like the middle east and us.. so in essense not all of it was spent on anything that benefits aussie buyers, instead they made sure the arabs and yanks would get what they wanted as well. Maybe the budget didnt quite stretch enough to fit a 20 cent seatbelt warning chime standard lol
