BMW Z4 ad banned

  • The Daily Telegraph
image Artist Robin Rhode and director Jake Scott with the BMW Z4.

Luxury car manufacturer BMW has been left in a spin after its new "artistic" TV ad was banned for encouraging hoon driving.

The Herald Sun reports Australia's advertising watchdog outlawed the ad for a BMW convertible because driving stunts shown in the clip would break Australian road rule laws.

The ad features the BMW Z4 coupe creating a giant artwork in a warehouse by driving with painted tyres, and includes the vehicle spinning its wheels and skidding.

The clip, which has been used around the world, was made by artist Robin Rhode and famed film director Ridley Scott's son, Jake.

The ad sparked a backlash; one viewer told the Advertising Standards Bureau and Channel 9 the clip "would encourage car hoons to spin and burn their tyres".

The watchdog banned the ad on the basis it depicted illegal driving.

"The board noted that the advertisement does depict in a number of places the driver intentionally allowing the wheels of the car to lose traction and perform ... a four-wheel drift," the bureau's judgment said.

BMW hit back, claiming it was art, not hooning.

"We believe the audience can distinguish between fantasy and reality," a statement from BMW to the board said.

  • what an absolute joke, australia has become a police and prison unlively state, I LOVE these type of ads, good work bmw! Too the low-lives that complained and the australian watchdog, you are far more likely too injure someone travelling at 50kmh driving normally (boringly) anyway.

  • Australia's advertising "watchdog" are just a bunch of idiots. An exceptionally good advert. Driver's in the main do use common sense; obviously the "watchdog" don't.

  • unbelievable.. go and get a life. This is a great add, even hoons have some common sense. whould hoon paint their wheels and do four wheels drifting? what about drag racing, they do burnouts as well...

  • I am sick to death of all these un-Australian whingers. Get off your high horse and get real! Ridiculous hypocrites crying "Ooh, the car is obviously being driven by a hoon and BMW is trying to glorify dangerous driving." - Get out of my country, I hate you. And even worse are these limp-wristed "watchdogs" that fall over and allow these types of bans as soon as a few, uppity, sheltered-life, fruits complain about anything even remotely interesting. I, for one, was glad to see a car manufacturer breaking the bounds of auto-advertisement. But no; we can't have any of that - it's too stimulating. Let's keep the viewers in their useless world, protected with beige bubble-wrap instead. You make me sick.

  • How rediculous! Do Hoon drivers drive in a covered indoor arena?? It is so obviously an add, even so called 'hoons' have more brains to imagine this is on a street, the driving is slow, calculated, and artistic, when will these idiots get it right?? They allow the worst swearing and the most indecent behaviour but not a creative add. They have lost it!!!

  • How anyone can believe this vehicle shown, in a defined space (a canvas) portaying the capabilities of the car in a profoundly artistic manner, is sending a negative message to it's audience is completely beyond me. A vehicle on a race track (which umm...kinda looks more like a road than a canvas), serving a purpose to promote products but even more so...to compete agressively, is something we allow into our homes daily?!?! Hmmm...I'm a little lost.. what are these sensors thinking?? I agree with sensorship up to a line, but it appears these drongo's have well and truly crossed it this time. To the drongo's: Stop clutching at straws and trying to wrap us all in cotton wool, in a poor attempt to justify your jobs as sensors!!!

  • God forbid a car manufacture like BMW would think outside the box and come up with such an outstanding commercial. What we have here are white collar, overpaid idiots that have far too much time on their hands. If only they would put all that time and half of what they classify "a brain" into curing cancer, we would have less stupid brainless ppl and more appreciation for the efforts companies like BMW have gone to illustrate some intelligence and new methods of selling a product (in this case the Z4). BMW keep those masterpieces coming!

    B of Sydney Posted on 03 July 2009 12:50am
  • How about some consistency? I was dissapointed when the holden ute ad (thunderstruck) was banned, as i am again with this beautiful BMW ad. But out of fairness to BMW and Holden, i complained to the commercial authorities about a Toyota commercial which had reverse J-Turns, spinning wheels, skid marks, and the corolla speeding directly towards a person all in a car park. Well i got an email back saying my request for it being banned was denied. In my opinion the toyota ad showed very dangerous driving, but the BMW ad was beautiful artwork. It would seem that the most boring car company on the planet, Toyota, can away with everything because they are sooo boring. If Toyota is allowed to do it, then allow the other carmakers. We want consistency.

We have them banning a car on a private ground with no other car in sight doing some driver training on ice roads. How ridiculous.

Sean of Brisbane Posted on 01 July 2009 9:59pm

Jakub of WA Posted on 01 July 2009 9:10pm
  • Wow! It must have been pretty bad. The Advertising Standards lot are a self-regulating, industry-based organisation that is notorious for letting advertisers get away with almost anything. Complaints about irresponsible advertising are usually routinely dismissed. For them to have banned this ad means they've either suddenly developed a social conscience (unlikely) or the ad was so bad that even they thought it had to be stopped.

Ban adverts that are actually a menace/rip off before you start banning ads for no reasons at all. With all the crap on TV today, I am staggered to hear that this well presented ad has been axed. What utter rubbish. And what kind of democracy allows this to happen without first checking public opinion? isn't this censorship of the media on a Nazi level? Just a thought.

Dave Atkins of Vic Posted on 30 June 2009 5:20pm
  • This has got to be the most rediculous thing I have ever read. As most of what everyone has said, it's in a warehouse and not a public road. If we were to continue along this fashion we might as well ban all action movies that have a car chase in it. And while we are at it why not ban all TV shows or Movies that have someone shooting a gun, because it might promote violence. I love my car, and would consider myself to be an enthusiast, I thought the ad was very clever, but never in my wildest dreams did it ever give me the motivation to go out side and try and slide around the road. This is a perfect example of something who has nothing to do, and is trying to justify their position of work.

Pity the micro-intellects on this watch-puppy board don't understand either the definition of 'public road' or 'four-wheel-drift' - neither of which appear in this advert. But let's not forget who put these people in office - the equally mindless socialists (i.e. labour voters) who think that by voting for a nanny state they can pick and choose how they want to be 'minded'. Now it is all coming back to haunt you boyos isn't it? This is just the beginning of your end-fo-freedoms! Rossco

After just returning from the USA and seeing some brilliant car ads showing enthusiastic driving on TV over there, it's embarrassing to see this creative ad shown throughout the world then banned here in Australia.

    Peter Posted on 30 June 2009 2:25pm
  • Yes this is pathetic and aggravating. It is the Nanny state for sure. The Government should focus on othe4r contributing factors to the road toll as well. SPEEDING is not the only factor, but it is an easy factor to measure and bring in revenue. Other factors for example are tailgating and not leaving enough distance to take evasive action. Another factor is our poor road conditions and congestion. Consider that our poipulation has increased many times over and our road toll has actually gone down. Yet politicians still go on about speed, speed and speed as if it is the be all and end all. Pathetic!

For God's sake please let the politicians know that not everyone wants to be wrapped up in bubble-wrap and sent through life in the 'precious cargo' section. I firmly believe that Australians are becoming the most over-governed peoples on the planet and when politicians and law-makers have enough time on their hands to pass on comments of this nature about an ADVERTISEMENT then a)they are not working hard enough on important social matters. b)there are waaayyy too many of them and the only reason to make comments such as this is because they know it and feel they have to justify their pathetic position in some way. Given this ban has been approved, I would suggest banning all motor sport from public view to ensure that people can’t be encouraged to race, overtake etc. Also I think banning BMX and crusty demons and X games should follow on the same basis. I just thought of something else. What happens if a Qantas pilot sees the Red Bull Air Race on TV. What if they are encouraged to try to fly under the Westgate or Sydney Harbour Bridge!? We obviously all need to be protected from ourselves as clearly no one is able to use their discretion and make a decision for themselves.

  • I agree Adam. How to make Australia a laughing stock around the world. I thought we were a Democracy, but it appears we are a dictatorship ruled by one silly wowser and a board of fools.

  • What a load of RUBBISH. This action is the politicians trying to be seen as doing something about this problem.

  • This is ridiculous. It only takes ONE complaint and the Bureau will pull an advertisment. The Z4 is not doing any burnouts on the road, its all on a canvas. Well done to Harolds Pedestrian Council, you wowsers...

  • Ban all movies, soaps and even news. What a joke this is. I love this ad for its creativity not for its slides and twirls.
