MIMS 2008: Holden & HSV Monaro

Known for raining of Ford?s motor show parties, Holden?s birthday celebrations dominated its presentation.

New chairman and Managing Director Mark Reuss, the American, struggled with some of the Australian names (Toraina, Monairo) but with a background in GM USA’s performance division, it was natural that he introduce the ‘cherry on top’ of the Holden/HSV range, the never before seen Holden Coupe 60.

Coupe 60

A next-generation Monaro in all but name, the Coupe 60 is named to celebrate the 60th birthday of Holden’s 48/215, but it’s also the 10th birthday since the original Monaro was unveiled in Sydney.

With a 6.0-litre engine with Active Fuel Management – cylinders that cut-out to save fuel – plus the ability to run on E85 ethanol fuel, there is a clear contradiction in the Coupe 60: it’s also heavily slanted towards racing.

The Coupe 60 features ‘Diamond Silver’ liquid metallic paint, ala McLaren’s F1 cars, 21-inch alloys with one-off hand-cut Kumho slicks, massive Brembo brakes and a side-exit exhaust. The undertray is flat-bottom, and runs to a rear underbody air diffuser. Bonnet nostrils and side gills are the garnish, but the interesting major features are the pillarless doors and lowered roof line, a feature designers say is production “possible”. Carbon fibre bucket seats feature inside, both front and rear.

Though a concept, the Coupe 60 is “production ready”. Based on the global GM rear-wheel drive platform shared with the VE, the rear end and wheelbase has been shorted to emphasise the length of the cabin and nose. The concept started in 2002 and Holden says is worth somewhere around $2.5 million.

Ruess stated the Coupe 60 was Holden’s gift to its fans. And we will look forward to its evolution into Monaro Mk3. HSV W427

HSV W427

It’s been a long time coming, but the HSV supercar is finally here. The W427, aka 7.0-litre, is “Australia’s first supercar” claimed Ruess. He added it will be Australia’s fastest car – a title Holden’s own Elfin brand might dispute, quicker than five seconds for the 0-100km/h and sporting a massive LS7 V8 with 370kW and 640Nm – figures that are 20 and 16 percent more than the current 6.0-litre HSVs.

The engine is the same as the Corvette ZR1 which means a dry sump, along with a unique cold-air intake and active exhaust with valves that open under pressure.

Finished in Panorama Silver, the same as the Walkinshaw Commodore released 20 years ago, the W427 will be priced somewhere around $125,000 to $140,000 when it’s available in July. Holden Sportwagon

Holden Sportwagon

Though it raced at the Bathurst 12 Hour three weeks earlier, and rather embarrassingly crashed out with brake failure, the Holden Sportwagon was unveiled as the prelude to its show stoppers. Due in June, the Sportwagon will come in sever versions including Calais and SS carrying a $1000 premium over its sedan equivalents.

  • Darky (post 3 March), I'm 100% with you. I went to the MIMS on thursday night last week and the scene was exactly as you describe - hardly anyone at the Holden/HSV stand and throngs at the Ford stand. If this was raining on Ford's parade then bring on the wet season!

    John Posted on 12 March 2008 3:08pm
  • u poor ford blokes , holdens r great and u know it too . at lease our v8s beat our six cyl engines ( not like a xr6 beats the xr8 - what a joke) want a good v8 car too rebadge too beat them

tony holden of midland Posted on 11 March 2008 7:50pm
  • holden and ford should spend more of their production dollars on building fuel friendly cars that every one can buy with oil hitting $102 us a barrel. These big engine cars have had their day the oil is running out and we still have cars designed to 1980's rules. hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell cars not V8 6-7 litre engines.

  • Danny cool - I bought my ve r8 (manual) as a demo for $61,000. It had 3000ks on it, last time I looked was a couple of weeks ago on this site and have been looking every couple of weeks for a while. People are "shifting" them for around 58-60,000 with around 30,000ks on it. Mine has 20,000 and I have enjoyed it immensely. Whilst losing how much? Also I have been cared for well by the team at Adelaide's city Holden HSV. So I doubt a limeted number car like this will decrease in value much, and that the sort of people that buy them would get rid of them quickly. So you can take your sorbent to your local ford/fpv dealer and ask them how much they get for a second hand 70something (slower...trust me) gt falcon. Even better go and buy some kimberly-clark tissues and take those, then you will be helping me pay for more tyres and track time!

Hamo of milli Posted on 04 March 2008 1:49am
  • Holden executives would have seen the new falcons at their launch a couple of weeks ago and thought to themselves "pffft no worries at all"... Afterwards they would have gone out for celebratory drinks... p.s What was with the FPV F6 at the MIMS having the most disgusting nylon seat trim???

    Paul Posted on 03 March 2008 2:00pm
  • What stands out about the HSV packaged Commodore (7 litres etc) is it looks like an oversize toy for a kid. But the FG Falcon looks like a car you would buy to drive every day. I went to the Melbourne Motor Show and the HSV Commodores are over the top. All I'm waiting for is the rockets to pop out from under the wheel arches (considering their size you could fit a couple of rockets), and take off.

    Tony M Posted on 03 March 2008 1:58pm
  • Ford has just released the FG. A ripper of a car, a car that deserves praise, a car that has already received praise in Detroit. But what happens on carsales? It barely gets a mention, instead, you'd rather focus on some over-priced piece of irrelevance. Did you even go to the MMS? Seriously? Or were these photos just taken from the media release? Because if you were there, you could've gauged the crowd's reaction to the cars. There were more people looking at the Toyota drag car than the over-priced Commodes. Over at the Ford stand? Could barely move! Between the Mondeo XR5 and drop top, to the G6ET, XR8 Ute, XR6T and the Boss GT, you'd be lucky to score a seat in any of them. Don't even get me started on the queue for bags, it was ridiculous. Now, I'm not trying to imply that Fords are better than Holdens, but clearly the majority of people are much more interested in a brand new car than just another 'show stopper'. Raining on Ford's parade?!? Hah! Evidently you weren't there. Maybe you guys should just report the news people care about. ie, new Falcon, new Commode, rather than 'ZOMG! Big Motor! Whoah! LOL!' Thanks for reading. smile

Darky of Melb Posted on 03 March 2008 9:33am
  • the words cashed up bogan comes to mind - they've added the finishing touches to their Masterton homes and don't mind spending $130k on a car with a 20L engine.

Luke of Sydney Posted on 02 March 2008 9:56pm
  • It will be good that Holden Coupe 60 be called Monaro. So Monaro could returning to a chance of sales again. It would be cool to see this new Muscle car on the roads.

Coolio Hunt Posted on 02 March 2008 8:41pm
  • you holden guys r so full of it, i,d like to send u all a pack of sorbent 3 ply, a crap commodore for 140k? u make me laugh, and then but it for 30g,s in 2 years lol. do i prove my point? btw try holden warranty? i suppose u all love that to? suckers.

danny cool of melbourne Posted on 02 March 2008 6:59pm
  • coupe 60 won't go into production unless there is a big export market for it.. it'll be to expensive for holdens just to make it for the local market.. beautiful coupe and would like to see it out on the road though..

    tony Posted on 02 March 2008 1:02pm
  • The rear view of the coupe is an asthetic disaster, unlike its predecessor which was an attractive car. The sportwagon is little better than a hatchback (as per the Chrysler 300 Wagon) and defeats the true purpose of a station wagon with its diminished cargo space. Unlike grunt fans, as a potential new car buyer who wants to support local manufacturers, I would be more impressed with Holden producing a more fuel efficient, or usable hybrid Commodore variant .

Neville Hawken of Templestowe Posted on 02 March 2008 10:37am
  • another page written in australian muscle cars history! two fantastic looking cars, hoping one will come true, hoping that the blue oval might hit back with something similar. keeping the OZ muscle live and well. $140k for a HSV W427? hmmmmm. didn't shannons auction sell HK monaro bathust addtion recently for around $200k?

troy berry of adelaide Posted on 02 March 2008 10:14am
  • that is just sheer brilance. What a great looking car that will meet all the requirement to continue the local aurgurement. At least with this car, this will allow us as australians, to still talk about the ausie cars. Well done holden, that suprised the hell out me.

garth jones of queensland Posted on 01 March 2008 10:06pm
  • wahooooooooo, another overpriced commodore....please,.... as someone else has said, why.... when you can buy true supercars for that money?? Yet another commodore with a different badge, big motor, small brakes, and crap build quality.

    stuart Posted on 01 March 2008 8:38pm
  • Reading Carsguide is like a Holden Brochure........talk about "cash for comments"! The "Adelaide Advertiser" has been quietly and selectively "pushing" Holdens for many, many, years...................sheer and utter bias.

Brian Jordan of Adelaide Posted on 01 March 2008 8:28pm
  • What a piece of rubbish holden.....your so called monaro failed and you expect the public to pay 125-140k sorry, rather pay for an 'HO' and drive around in a classic not plastic

shane stoneham of melbourne Posted on 01 March 2008 8:26pm
  • What a ugly car, paying that sort money come on.

Bradley of Brisbane Posted on 01 March 2008 5:12pm
  • M3 RS4 C63 AMG Three cars which are/will be similarly priced to the 427. Why anyone would want to buy the HSV over those listed above in beyond me. Quality build, German engineering, looks (interior and exterior) ride, handling, performance, fuel economy, safety all outgun the Commodore with a big engine. Want to be on par with the big boys - how bout desiging a vehicle with LESS weight. Seems all Holden can do is add weight and displacement. One trick pony. The Coupe60 - looks like a sleek German cars body with an ugly commodore nose up front. Not a fan.

Matthew of Real World Posted on 01 March 2008 3:16pm
  • why dont you just try and get more power out of a 308 or 350 than goin to a 427 and getting crap horse power, prob does 30lt to the 100km, sorry but i dont like it and i think its a big peice of crap,

    sean Posted on 01 March 2008 1:38pm
  • Like the coupe... especially the rear "cut here" line for the C pillar. The engineering has already done for a convertable (re:Camaro). Come on Holden, time for a Marilyn rebirth.

    Jeff Posted on 01 March 2008 1:36pm
  • How can some of you compare the 427 against porsche etc when no one has driven the 427 yet?

    Tim Posted on 01 March 2008 9:35am
  • I dont know, the coupe 60's styling just looks wrong to me. Even though it looks nothing like them, it just reminds me of Daewoo for some reason. To me, it just seems as illogical as making a Daewoo Nubira into a coupe.

Dan of Dubbo Posted on 01 March 2008 9:23am
  • Just another limited edition so that Holden can cheat another win at the Bathurst 12 hour. Thats if the brakes dont fail again.

Clarke Hudson Posted on 01 March 2008 5:44am
  • the cuope will be a nice car to produce as it will probably outsell the previous models. It is a good looking car that has shown the depth of what holden can do to out do ford to keep them out of reach by the blue oval which will never be as good as the holden. wether u like it or not the commodore is still the top selling car even withthese petrol prices. so bring on the new monaro peter

peter moelaart Posted on 01 March 2008 2:05am
  • THE ENGINE USED IN THE CORVETTE ZR1 IS the 6.2 litre Supercharged LS9 engine. The 7.0 naturally aspirated LS7 engine is used in the Corvette ZO6. If you ask me, thats a pretty embarrassing mistake..... And shut it you Ford mongers, these cars are BEAUTIFUL. And why wouldn't you you buy a Porsche Boxter or an Audi S5? Because they have around 250kW (average) when these cars have over 300kW or 370kW!!! Not only that, but you are supporting Australia by buying these cars, and your showing your support to the country and its unique style of engineering! Although.....an M3 or an RS4 is a very strong prospect. Personally id buy an RS4 over a Lamborghini, so Holdens lost the fight on me there....... BUT these cars still have their own attraction. Comone, the most powerful Holdens ever! And they are rather well styled!

Tomas Rivera of Brisbane Posted on 01 March 2008 12:50am
  • What an ugly, incoherent thing, that coupe is. The design just doesn't work from most angles, nevermind the tacked on bits that look tacked on. PS: Note to ch7 news look up the pronunciation of the word 'coupe' ...

    db Posted on 01 March 2008 12:38am
  • Anyone sucked into thinking Holden will produce the Coupe 60 has no idea. And don't go thinking they can call it a Monaro, the ACCC are already onto them about that because they said that the last Monaro was the final one and can;t use the name for another 25 years! This car is an absolute beat up! What's the big deal about it??? Ooooh...they welded up the doors and gave it poxy looking side exhausts....as for the HSV.....you could get much better for that kind of coin!

Trevor Gee of Melbourne Posted on 01 March 2008 12:32am
  • Well done Holden. Question marks linger over whether this is the best and most powerful choice of engine. Some say the evil LS9 supercharged 6.2 litre (approx 450kw) is a better choice. Ive even heard people saying how they wish holden would supercharge a LS7 to give approx 500KW! Good luck anyway Holden/HSV and best wishes for the two new concepts.

hsv fan Posted on 29 February 2008 9:44pm
  • Holden hanging on to a dream good luck if they succeed. if not buy a Kia Grand Carnivial.

    Walshy Posted on 29 February 2008 9:08pm
  • I think the front looks ok but the back is pretty foul! Not to keen on the baugatti front end either. NO THANKS...

    Falcman007 of hell Posted on 29 February 2008 8:51pm
  • I recall the Holdens which won the Bathurts 24 hr in 2003. They were criticised because a purchaser couldn't buy a 7 litre Holden off the showroom floor. On that occasion they defeated some very fancy and expensive Europeans. (Lambo, Ferrari and Porsche) comfortably. As an owner of an Alfa, I of course was impressed by the upstart Holden. After all Ferraris are race cars, that's all they make. Two door, high priced, supercars. Thrashed by a Holden. The question should be, why buy an audi, or porsche or benz, when you can buy a Holden which is faster and more reliable.

tony nemaric of somerville Posted on 29 February 2008 7:53pm
  • If any of these things actually go into production, ala look at the history, then good work Holden. If Holden do produce and sell this 7 litre monster it will be the first time Holden have had the title of fastest australian production car, eg from ford or Holden, but is the 427 going to be a sedan or coupe?

David Aldridge of Adelaide Posted on 29 February 2008 7:39pm
  • Just 2 more reasons not to be a ford fan .Good on ya HOLDEN

Garry Rhodes of Eastern Creek Posted on 29 February 2008 7:39pm
  • heaps of power looks good and a v8 !all good but where can you drive it at high speeds on our freeways or roads! Its all rubbish and no ordinary bloke can afford it !ford and holden all cheap and dont last like the good old days !

    tony Posted on 29 February 2008 7:01pm
  • Why dont you Toyota drivers go back to your Corollas and let u enjoy this. LOL BRING IT ON! My only disappointment is that I was hoping for a production version of Torana. But this will do!

rentakeyboard of thornton Posted on 29 February 2008 6:51pm
  • after going through all the photos of the motorshow , it has the same flared guards the same styling as pretty much every other car out there , holdens ve model is only 2 years old and already looks drab , this thing just has more plastic . its good ford didn't follow suit and done something original , i just cant decide what this thing looks more like an audi or a bmw . I think holden/hsv raided their spare parts bin .

michael kocks Posted on 29 February 2008 6:49pm
  • why would you buy a 140k 7l holden V8 when you can buy a fpv f6 boost it a bit and it will chop that holden day in day out with out any probs. you dont see any 7l F1 cars do you? thats cause they aint stupid

mack of sydney Posted on 29 February 2008 6:45pm
  • Its chevy wetdream with , 'jee i wish i was australian badges on it '.

michael kocks Posted on 29 February 2008 6:19pm
  • The coupe is just gorgeous, but the grill is a very love or hate. Gorgeous car, holdens birthday present, they made it every small boys dream hehe.

Hamish Mcdonald Posted on 29 February 2008 6:01pm
  • and ford, what have they brought to the party this year?

al reeves Posted on 29 February 2008 5:58pm
  • I studied this cool Coupe Muscles Car. It not named Monaro or anything else at the Moment. If they get the green light it would be great to be called Monaro. Few year ago we were upset that Holden kill off the Monaro in 2003 or 04. But now it time to give Monaro a chance to well. We loved it. Sales went well here & New Zealand. If it does come back let hope better then before.

Monaro Fan Posted on 29 February 2008 5:55pm
  • m3 = 157000 rs4= 164500 c63 amg = 139500 cheapest porsche with a roof = 201000 so it could be cheaper than them all, with more power and torque. Don't forget that those other cars are also probably much more common in their home countries, just like Commodores and Falcons are here. Having said all that, I wouldn't buy any of them because I couldn't justify the price.

    Glenn Posted on 29 February 2008 5:30pm
  • To those that are knocking the car can you at least give some credit where credit is due - we have 3 "australian" car manufactures and only 1 ever builds anything that that is either a true concept car or a car that will excite.

Stephen H of Sydney Posted on 29 February 2008 4:37pm
  • hey petee i cant fully agree with you that the w427 has ripped off nissans R35, the R35 is meant to go like a bullet at 0-100 in 3.5 seconds, but hey if you put them two cars next to each other id pick the holden anyday, unsure why some people on here arent sure about he front bar, i absoloutly love it. is the toughest front holden has ever made!

Rob of melbourne Posted on 29 February 2008 4:25pm
  • Australia's First Supercar didn't come from HSV. Mark Ruess must of forgotten or chose to ignore that CSV - Corsa Specialised Vehicles, have been putting the 427 LS-7 into Aussie holdens since last year and they have been getting 400kW and 660Nm with their own exhaust and tuning. Make the HSV 370kW & 640Nm look just like Ford's attempts at fast V8s. Ho-Hum.......

Brian Merritt of Melbourne Posted on 29 February 2008 4:14pm
  • I hope Biante or Classiccarlectables brings out a 1:18 model of this - and SOON!

matt of brisbane Posted on 29 February 2008 4:02pm
  • Gee Shane, bitter Ford fan eh? Both very nice, the HSV WILL be going into production, but I don't know about the Monaro. Lets hope it does, but Bob Lutz has already ruled out a GTO, so maybe if the exports to the middle east can be made to ad up right. Fingers crossed

Daniel of Melb Posted on 29 February 2008 3:25pm
  • Nice work Holden. You have ripped off the Nissan R35 GTR.

    petee Posted on 29 February 2008 2:59pm
  • Holden and HSV have done a great job. Happy birthday Holden. Happy birthday HSV. I look forward to reading more on these great cars. i am still undecided on the big black grill on the w427. Oly question is, when will the production cars get the AFM V8 with support for E85 fuel?

    dave Posted on 29 February 2008 1:40pm
  • So what? A couple of over priced holdens that probably won't get made. We've been down the 427 engined holden before, and not much came of that, and who really thinks that Holden will make another two door. Talk about a beat up.

Shane of Sydney Posted on 29 February 2008 1:33pm
  • what a great birthday present. what great looking cars. Although undecied about the big black grill on the W427.

    dave Posted on 29 February 2008 11:25am
  • Take that up ya FG falcon. Just another 427 reasons to buy a real car.

    Gavin Posted on 29 February 2008 11:23am
  • They are both a very very very good looking car, especially the Coupe 60. The interior is a little bit different and the exterior is also very impressive - rear tail lights and side exhausts are very nice. Not a fan of the 21-inch though. I really hope Holden actually start production on these ASAP and make them available towards the end of this year to compete with the new Ford FG models. I genuinely feel sorry for the people who purchased a VE SSV within the last 6 months because I'm sure they are probably bleeding out of their ears after seeing the Coupe 60.

Alex of Melbourne Posted on 29 February 2008 11:19am
  • why would anyone pay $120-140k for a holden ? u can get a m3, rs4 or the c63 amg which are much better in terms of quality and quicker around the track and probably uses less fuel with the exception of c63. wait 2 years time and u can grab one for half the price

    david Posted on 29 February 2008 10:48am
  • who would pay 125k - 140k for a commonh0re? when you can get a porsche or an audi or.... the list goes on
