Ford is yet to commit to an Australian launch for its Mondeo wagon.

Ford's big push into the medium segment could well have a family load-lugger added to the range if the people speak.

Crowd response to the Mondeo wagon, which runs the same impressive driveline as the TDCi sedan, will be a big determining factor for the wagon's chance of an Aussie visa.

The turbodiesel wagon was unveiled at last week's Melbourne Motor Show, aiming to tempt SUV buyers back into the passenger-car market.

Ford says the TDCi wagon is a “fuel efficient, safety-laden sports-styled wagon” that combines a strong feature list with first-rate dynamics.

Ford Australia president Bill Osborne says if the Mondeo turbodiesel wagon gets the nod, it will fill the sports-wagon niche between the Mondeo sedan and the Falcon wagon. “We're taking this opportunity to gauge reaction to this new model as we believe its inclusion could add another option to the Ford passenger vehicle line-up,” he says. The turbodiesel power-plant has already proved to be the pick of the litter in the Mondeo sedan range, but the wagon would get extra outputs.

The load-lugger has a 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel offering 129kW and 400Nm, up from the 96kW and 320Nm on offer in the sedan. The wagon's safety features mimic the sedan's - anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist, dynamic stability control and seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag and full-length side curtain airbags.

The wagon's cargo area offers 535 litres of cargo space with the rear seats in place, or fold them flat and Ford says there is 1733 litres of useable space at your disposal.

The wagon sits on 18in wheels and also gets the top-grade Sony six-CD eight-speaker sound system, rain-sensing front windscreen wipers, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The wagon also features keyless entry and keyless start, alcantara/leather trimmed front seats (which are also heated), a sunroof and voice control with Bluetooth phone connectivity.

  • Ford are mad not to bring this here, especially if the think that people are going to hand out more money on a less fuel efficient Falcon wagon that has been around since 1988 with a leaf spring rear suspension, Holden have had 2 all new wagons out since then yet Ford keep trying to flog us that old horse (BF III)

  • I know it is exactly what I would be keen to purchase. I hope Ford Australia takes the positive step to bring this vehicle in.

  • Totally agree, car makers need to start leading the way with bringing in more models to Australia rather than only doing it when another manufacture takes the gamble. I think Ford would be crazy not to bring this car out here. Big potential!!!!!!!

  • It doesn't take a genius to realize that fuel prices in this country will continue on an upwards spiral. As motorists we demand space, safety and creature comforts in our cars. All these things add weight. Until there are economically viable alternative fuels, diesel seems an obvious choice to reduce our fuel consumption. A Mondeo TDCi would most likely achieve 7-8l/100km and yet offers better pulling power than a 50% less efficient Falcon or Territory petrol.
